Well, depends on your definition of middle aged, but no I'm not bald. I haven't reached glorious stabguy levels of flow but I had hair down to my shoulders and bangs that covered my entire forehead when I was a kid. That changed when my grandpa saw me pitch in the all-star game for baseball and confused me with a girl because of my hair. When that happened I told my mom I was getting my head shaved no matter what but she set up a haircut for me the next day at the salon she went to and said if I didn't like it I could have them shave it off. Lo and behold the next day I walk in and the woman cutting my hair is a playboy bunny right down to the platinum blonde hair and curves. She finished cutting my hair, asked if I liked it, and me being an adolescent just on the inside of puberty told her that I loved it unconditionally. I had spent an entire week talking up shaving my head to my friends and family only to walk out of that salon with a fresh trim and a hanging head of shame.

That was the day that I learned women can get men to do just about anything by doing absolutely nothing. I only wish my father taught me this before my mom did.

your problem here wasn't that you let the woman decide for you (the trim was probably better than the shave)
the problem here was that you talked about shaving it before you did, and then not being able to follow thorugh.

that's why it's best to never tell anyone about what you plan to do, just so no one knows when it fails.

No need for anyone to panic. Michael Bay is indeed making a fifth Transformers movie, but it's gonna be the last one. Then we'll have something to rant about. Wink

so this weekend I finished 100%ing Syndicate and getting all the trophies. I'm glad you don't need all perks to get to 100% because that would be a real grind.

The only trophies I had to grind in anyway were:
- the one for breaking 5000 destructibles: I only had to grind it for like 5 minutes though, because I knew I would have to at some point so I hit everything on my way everywhere (hint: use the buses that can take down building awnings as well, and drive in The Strand/Westminster)
- the one for kicking 50 people off trains: i don't know if the stun button kick counts or not. i suspect it doesn't and you have to use the attack button kick. the best place i found for this is sequence 2, evie's first mission. kill the first guy, then run through the prompts and kick those two off the train. then run through the next prompts and kick the first group of 2 off the train. then run ahead to the two guys that climb on top of the train and kick them off. finally, restart from checkpoint to spawn right before those final two guy that climb on top of the train and repeat that step a ton of times.
- the one for countershooting 50 enemies before they shoot you: this one is a pain. you have to be close enough to them that when you "dodge" it's actually a countershot. this means that they have to be highlighted in white (for a melee attack) and not yellow (for a ranged attack). this also means your primary weapon should be drawn (as another visual clue that you are close enough). finally, you can't be too close or they will melee attack you instead. how to grind? go to buckingham palace, run on the roof, bump into a sniper and turn to face him. when he goes to shoot you, countershot. run to the next guy. there are four on the roof. once you get all four, fast travel to the top of buckingham palace again. you will know that you got a countershot properly in two ways: first, you only hit the button once and shot back (if you are too far away, you will dodge only. even if you hit the button twice, the second one will be a quickshot. plus, if you have to dodge then you clearly didn't shoot first). the second way to know you got it right is that it uses no ammo.

so why is this in the rant thread? because, i'll tell you why. after finally doing all of this, i was going through the database entries. but i found a shortcut. there is the pause button to bring up the main menu (options on ps4) and the map button (the touchpad on ps4). i found out after i was done that if you long press the map button, it brings you straight to the progression log (bypassing the main menu). countless times did i go to the menu, then the progression log to read things like perks, conquest activity dossiers, etc. now i know the shortcut when it is utterly unneeded. that's why this post is in the rant thread.

Story time.

My dog is awesome. He's the most lovable dog I've ever met. He's also extremely obedient, loves to play, etc.

Vignette 1: Anyway, as part of his 6-month/yearly checkups, he gets blood work done. 3-4 months ago he had one and one of his liver enzymes was off the charts elevated. We put him on medicine and spot checked him twice since then. Last week, we checked again and it's still elevated.

Keep in mind, he's completely asymptomatic and is still is hyper lovable self.

Vignette 2: Baxter goes to day camp at PetSmart 2-3 times a week. Everyone there loves him and knows him by name. Every time I pick my dog up from doggie day camp, I stop by the vet counter to get his weight. He hops up on the scale, I tell him to sit, he sits, I get his weight and we leave. Easy as that. No problems at all.

Vignette 3: As part of his ongoing liver issues, the next step was more intense blood work. We were on the phone with the vet yesterday and were informed to fast him for 12 hours before the test. They take some blood then feed him a fatty meal, wait 2 hours and take some more blood to see how his liver is processing the fatty foods. Pretty standard to get a 12 hour fast baseline for such things. Sadly (for Baxter), we had to do this. We gave him his favorite food at 7pm last night, he got a treat and we took it away at 8pm. Sadly, he didn't get his night snack. He doesn't overeat, so we normally leave food out 24/7 for him. When we go to bed, he goes outside to go to the bathroom, comes in, eats a few bites of food as a snack, and comes to bed. It's his routine, and he loves routine. He didn't get to do this last night and I'm sure was sad.

Rant: My wife takes him to the vet this morning to drop him off. Part of the protocol of check-in, is to get his weight. The vet tech checking him in has the information and knows why he's there... but for some reason gave him a treat to entice him to sit on the scale. The scale he sits on 2-3 times a week with no reward but a pat on the head. Because of this 1 treat, we can't do the test today. He fasted for nothing. On top of that, he doesn't get that meal. My wife took him to day camp instead since she was already there, but she didn't have food for him. So he will continue to fast until I get him and take him home. Because of one vet tech who didn't fully read the procedure he was there for and gave him an unnecessary treat, he fasts and will have to do so again tonight.

I've been dealing with the worst migraine I've had my entire life. It started Saturday during a work shift as a headache and progressively got worse. Two days later, this pain has enveloped my head, gone down my neck, and down half my back. It's even affecting my throat so it's difficult to eat anything without hurting. I've been stuck in bed or on my living room couch until I had to attend a required meeting I couldn't get out of.

I took some pain meds earlier and it's getting easier, but damn is it overwhelming.

NEW update:

Found out I had mono (Mononucleosis for those that don't know). I've gotten this once before a few years ago. It was the worst I've ever felt then and that didn't change now. The medicine they gave me for my strep throat was also the "test" for mono. How do they test for mono using this? I'm glad you f*cking asked.

You take this medicine a couple of times a day. Not hard. After the 3rd day, you notice hives on your skin. Then you get a body-wide rash the next day that covers everything. EVERYTHING. Touching any object hurts your hands, so I couldn't even hold a pencil or stylus to complete my work. Of course this all happens during midterm week, so getting projects done was essentially torture. What usually takes me an hour to do took me up to 5. My doctor said the rash is an indicator of mono. It's frustrating because I told them I've had it before. So it's already in my body no matter what. OF COURSE I HAVE IT.

But at least my other symptoms are gone! At this point, the rash is going away. I still have the sharp pains/itches now and then, but my skin is almost fully cleared up thanks to Aveeno and their oatmeal skin cream. GOOD SH*T. AND THIS AIN'T EVEN SPONSORED.

I went to the dentist a couple of days before I received any symptoms. That's the only way I can think of that I got sick. I wasn't kissing anybody recently, so that's either the biggest coincidence or someone wasn't hygienic during the appointment.

TL;DR

Mono: 0/10

I always heard about a disease called mono in American movies and tv shows. I had no idea what they meant by it, but from context I gathered it was some virus thing that totally shuts you down. I had no idea if it even was as common in Europe, since I had never heard of it before. Right now I decided to look it up and it turns out we use a different name for it altogether: Pfeiffer's disease.

A childhood friend of mine had it once but her mother thought she was just exaggerating something mild (tbf, she did do that before). I remember the two of us riding our bikes home in the afternoon and she had to get off her bike and rest against a tree because she was just so tired. Her mom took her to the doctor after. I'm just really glad I never caught it.

Man, that sucks, Joey. Get well soon.

why does it have to be the dentist that gave it to you?
if, as you say, it's already in your system from before, isn't it a more reasonale explanation, that the old one just flared up again?

The timing was just so coincidental. It's most likely not 100% a hygienic mistake on the dentist's part, but it's hard not to think about the possibility.

What a difference two years makes. The University of Washington is headed to the national semifinals. Of course it's going to be tough to get past the Alabama juggernaut. I'm just thankful the Huskies have a legitimate shot at another national championship, 25 years after their last title.

Congrats, Stab! Should be an interesting matchup, for sure.

Everyone is saying how weak the Pac12 is this year, but they're only saying that because for most of the year it was Washington, Washington State and Colorado on top and not Oregon, Stanford and USC.

SEC - 5 teams ranked, 1 in top 10, 0 teams with 3 or fewer wins
Pac 12 - 5 teams ranked, 3 in top 10, 1 team with 3 or fewer wins
B1G - 4 teams ranked, 4 in top 10, 4 teams with 3 or fewer wins
ACC - 5 teams ranked, 1 in top ten, 1 team with 3 or fewer wins

It looks to me like the B1G is just feasting on shitty teams throughout their conference. The Pac12 actually has high ranked teams, AND mid ranked teams, and few bottom dwellers. The B1G has high ranked teams and bottom dwellers. The SEC has Alabama and a few mid ranked teams. And the ACC is the same as the Pac12, but without the good teams at the top.

Ugh. two rants.

First: This past Sunday, I did my weekly water change in my fish tank as I always do. I turned off the filter and the powerhead, changed the water, plugged them back in. Since I rinsed the filter pads and sponges in my tank last week, this week I didn't need to. That's all I needed to do. Now, I have pre-filter sponges fitted over the intakes of my filter so as to not suck up any baby shrimps, and they work great. However, I didn't notice that this sponge fell off my filter intake... until i heard a grinding sound come from my filter about 6 hours later. One of my fish got sucked through the filter intake and was shredded by the impeller, all because I didn't check things before plugging it back in.

Two: I'm building a board game table out of plywood. I'll save the actual build for another post. I was staining the wood last night in my garage and knocked over the can of stain and lost about 1/4 can of stain all over my table, floor, other things in the splash zone, etc. Now my garage smells of stain and mineral spirits and I'm hoping I can get the rest of the stain out when it all dries. Ugh. What a week.

You and me both. It was one of my more expensive fish ($9/ea - a lot for pet store small freshwater fish) but it's not about the cost. I've had this guy for almost a year now. One of the first fish I put in this tank. I've had him since he was about 1" long and he had grown to about 2" long (but more than 4× his weight) and he was doing so well. The rest of his school is down to just 6 fish, which is approaching a level of fish where I'll need to get more to keep them comfortable (I lost another one of his school to disease/not eating over Christmas). He was strong and beautiful and healthy. At least it wasn't one of the ones I had to mail order from Florida. Those are still fine (even though I lost one of them recently to some weird problem that I never figured out).

So I sprained my ankle yesterday. Some guys were working on a house next door and I think the small metal tube I rolled my foot over probably belonged to them. Anyways, the pain wasn't immediate whatsoever. In fact, it didn't hit me until 3 AM this morning. I already have insomnia every other night, but the pain kept me up without any chance of sleep. It feels like the worst charlie horse collected into one small area.

This is why I don't do sports anymore. But I guess bodily injury happens sooner or later, regardless. Tongue

I realized today that I don't have much of university left to do. At least the required bits. One of the final things is a required javascript course I'm currently taking. I'm well beyond the passing grade level, however I'm still 3% below the lowest grade level where I don't have to take any more coding classes. The final project is 30% of the full class grade and could seriously hurt me if I don't do enough.

By "hurt me" I of course mean I have to continue taking coding classes, not really messing with my GPA or Dean's list status.

I've never felt so focused in my life to NOT take more of a class.

I feel like this is something I mention a lot to people (maybe on here, too).

I've applied to so many jobs this weekend that I lost count. Over the years, I've had to sacrifice school for work or vice-versa. It's difficult to hold a decently-paying job while trying to pay to go to school, which I do from my short bursts of income and/or my government-issued financial aid refunds. I find it very challenging to do both because the schedules tend to intersect a lot, either forcing me to drop a class, take fewer work hours, or cut out sleep time. This has always ended with one or both parts suffering in quality.

It looks like I might have to take either this coming semester or next semester off in order to work full time and save enough money to finish. It's most irritating this time around because I really only have those two semesters left until I finally get a Bachelor's of Science (should've received one in 2014, but I took 2 years to work). It's frustrating knowing my workplace capabilities and not being considered for positions that would greatly benefit me simply because I don't have a degree yet. I've seen internships that actually require a Bachelor's degree.

I realize that most of my stress comes from the hurdle of getting this degree and having better opportunities because of it. I basically applied to whatever I could find that pay pretty well and fit my strengths the best, even if it's in another state. At this point, I'll take whatever I can, and hopefully those become foots in doors after I finally graduate.
