I saw The Hobbit at a movie theater Thursday night. In case the world was going to end, it better not have during the movie! Things I liked:

Story

Spoiler: Highlight to view
It remains faithful to the books, while adding some other things. It's understandable, since they had to make it "that word" awesome. There's a lot of action sequences and humor, which I love. Love Nearly everything that happens in the book up to that point is in the movie. There was even one part where a character says something the narrator wrote in the book (how golf was invented, lol).

Characters
Spoiler: Highlight to view
Same person playing Gandalf. The dwarves are cool, especially Thorin Oakenshield. Bilbo is a whimp most of the story, but I can sort of see why. Good thing there's going to be two more movies, help flesh out the characters.

Songs
Spoiler: Highlight to view
Yes, they actually play the songs from the book! I really like the way they did, first when they were throwing the dishes around, then singing about the mountain in that low voice, never imagined it like that. And they even had the goblins singing about torture.

Other Characters
Spoiler: Highlight to view
There was a pale goblin that I didn't think was mentioned in the Hobbit, but from another Tolkien book that goes into more detail. There were also cameos from Frodo, Saruman and that one lady (forgot her name, the narrator in Lord of the Rings).

Beginning
Spoiler: Highlight to view
Cool how they first explained how the dragon Smaug drove the dwarves away from the mountain. I love the visuals of the mystical ancient cities.

Ending
Spoiler: Highlight to view
A good time to leave off. They just escaped the goblins and wargs. Then it shows Smaug inside the mountain. I actually thought it would be funny if it ended there. Then the credits rolled. What?! Shock

All in all, I can't wait for part 2! Party

I finally saw the new Star Trek(the JJ Abrams one) and i LOVED it! Every die-hard Trek fan should see that movie! The casting is all perfect especially the big 3, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the sequel.

I saw a preview for it at the movie theater. It's going to be called Star Trek Into Darkness

I saw Iron man 3 on Saturday, it was good. I never really read any iron man comics, so i'm not sure if they stayed true to the comics( most likely no). But it was still enjoyable. And this movie has one big twist that'll surprise you, in a good way.

EDIT: IMIII references The avengers a couple times

Spoiler: Highlight to view
Causing stark to have panic attacks afew times in the movie.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which

Every time I think to go to a movie, I search and it's no longer in theaters... most recently, Olympus Has Fallen...

will probably take the wife out this weekend and see something... likely Iron Man 3 or The Great Gatsby... or who knows, maybe The Croods...

With a title that sounds like an Elder Scrolls game, what did you expect? Tongue

Hmm, lets see, good movies. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was very good and interesting, living up to the originals, but in a somewhat different way. Cabin in the Woods is great as a horror with plot twists (you think the movie is given away from what you see in the trailer, but you have no idea). Not really any other movies I can recommend now.

Just recently Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters was put on Netflix. I thought it already had the movie, but it turned out to be some cheap rip offs. Anyway the movie is loads of fun. When I first heard about it I thought it was an insult to the story until I found out it started the same and continued with them hunting down witches (be prepared for some awesome action scenes).

That's by Pixar, right? Or as Stabguy would call them, "the Toy Story people". Man I haven't seen Disney Pixar movies in a while.

the late 60's looked like a cool time. Very similar to how in Back to the Future the fifties didn't look that bad. Another similarity to Back to the Future is in the modern day period some people said a few things that get repeated after Agent J goes back in time, and it's just funny how they do that.

Another pleasant surprise was the political thriller State of Play starring Russell Crowe and Rachel McAdams. Don't let Ben Affleck's name turn you off from seeing this. He was confined to the role of a stiff politician where he couldn't ruin the movie. Wink

Wow, does everyone really hate Ben Affleck? I like his role in Paycheck, and honestly can't understand the hate for his role in the upcoming Batman Superman movie.

I don't think everyone hates him. He's directed some really great movies. I recommend "The Town" (even though he is in it as an actor as well), and "Argo" was quite enjoyable.

He's a fairly decent actor when the role calls for him to be stone-faced and have a monotone.

I'm just excited to see Batman and Superman together for the first time AND Wonder Woman finally getting the movie treatment in the same film. Daredevil was 11 years ago and Affleck has improved MUCH since then. I'm hopeful.

If you watch it, try to find out as LITTLE as you can about it.

Trance by Danny Boyle is one of the best films I've ever seen in my entire life.
But I warn you, it's very disturbing, psychologically. There's no actual gore or anything in the movie.
Everything it does to make the viewer uncomfortable is just in the writing and plot.

Hint: It's a movie about hypnosis and hypnosis therapy. That's all you're allowed to know.
But it's beautiful, and has a killer ending that will make you ask questions and think Inception might've taken more than a few cards out of its book.

Why does everyone keep saying that?

Or do cartoons not count?

I have been watching a lot more movies lately. In contrast to a few years ago when I was far more interested in video games, I am nearly on a movie binge.
Some recommendations:

Sci fi- They Live. A low budget film by John Carpenter. A man discovers aliens have infiltrated society and are controlling people through subliminal messages. Great example of turning small things into big ideas.

Car/racing movies- The Wraith. A late 80's movie starring Charlie Sheen. Definitely a guy movie. It has car chases Dougie's lightning, adolescent gang members Davie, beautiful women Shy, and explosions Trig's nuke. My favorite movie in that subcategory. Next favorite is Death Race 2000. A cult classic about a race in which several racers obtain points by running over people. Shock It's awesome Sylvester Stallone is one of the racers.

Shows- Lately I've been watching some shows from my childhood. A friend described Family Matters as the first great sitcom. The 90's wouldn't be the same without Urkel! Another show I find impressive is a drama called Boy Meets World. From the very start there is great chemistry between characters, especially Cory and his teacher. Very entertaining.

That was more of a straight to DVD/TV movie than a live action "real" take on it. Movie cinematic universes of these characters have always taken place in their own single worlds. Although that movie was brilliant...

If you wanted to use that argument, you could also say that the Incredible Hulk TV specials that showed Thor and Daredevil teaming up with Hulk already did what Avengers set out to do. It's just not the same.

So yesterday night I saw the third Hobbit movie in theaters. And the last time I was in a theater was to see the first Hobbit movie late at night on December 20 2012 the day before the "world ended" (no flaming comets falling from the sky when I left the theater. Such a disappointment).

Even if splitting the book into three movies is a cash grab, and even if some added characters and plot were unnecessary, it's still an AWESOME, EPIC movie. The characters, creatures, acting, fight scenes all 10/10. As beautiful as the mythical Arkenstone.

John Wick is fucking awesome.

I watched SPECTRE (the new James Bond) last sunday, and while it's a very good movie, it just felt like the usual. Like the cinematography is great (the film opens with a 2-3 minute long take), the soundtrack is top-notch, the story is well-written, and the acting is great... but it just doesn't do anything extra. There's nothing that makes this film memorable.

This is EXACTLY how I felt about AC Syndicate after 98%ing. It "does (almost) everything right," but that's all it does and it left me like, [shrug] "Alright. That was neat."

I posted this in another forum. No, I'm not cheating on you guys.

I hear you. There's just too much to do... too much collectible chasing... etc to make it enjoyable any more. Just open a map of Unity and you can imagine how overwhelming the game has become to actually explore things.

The main problem I have with the game is this: if you do just the main story, your character isn't leveled up enough to not get frustrated near the end; if you do even 1/3 of the side content, your character is so over powered that the story missions aren't even fun anymore. Maybe if there was a better way to scale the difficulty I would enjoy them more.

All said, [my] review on Syndicate is more positive than negative... but I'm a fan of the series. I can TOTALLY understand why some people get bored of doing the same damn things every game. There are new things in Syndicate to do though (train robberies, etc) but they don't feel as fresh as they could. Unity added poorly implemented Co-op, which was really cool, but overall the series has stagnated since Brotherhood.

That's all I wrote. Perhaps the word Review should not have been used. Let me finish exploring the game and I'll write something in time. I have only just 100%ed the story. I have not collected all Helix glyphs (ie, present day story). I have not ventured into the WWI glyph area DAZ mentioned. I just did the main story.

Spoiler: Highlight to view
one thing i thought was very out of character and unneeded at the time was Evie and Henry's love story. apparently you have to collect a collectible to see it unfold. having done none of that, their apparent love, and Jacob's disdain for it, were very out of character as I saw them... because i didn't do the side content that apparently was part of the main story. I keep hearing mixed reviews on Spectre, which is to be expected. Critics tend to hate big budget series, especially one with such a long track record. But from all that I've heard, it's exactly what I want it to be. I don't want cinematic brilliance with an airtight story line and characters who are completely believable. I want Bond to be cool as hell, drive a car that I'll never even see on the road, blow something up, make at least one snarky comment that makes me laugh, and provide some beautiful "scenery". I don't want an Oscar worthy film. I want something that keeps my attention and makes me wish my car was equipped with $1 million in gadgets. That's why I love the Fast & Furious series. Nobody can convince me there is an Oscar winner in that lineup, but I'm always pumped when Vin Diesel beats the hell out of a room full of guys twice his size or The Rock throws out some WWE worthy line.

Re: Spectre

I haven't seen it. I've heard critic review though. It sounds like a "bond film," which isn't a bad thing. I think the "problem" people have is that Skyfall touched on things other Bond Films haven't. It made you "feel" for the characters in a human way. Spectre sounds like it's back to the basics and doesn't touch on those things as much, so is "set up to fail" in that regard. I'll watch it over Thanksgiving and come back with my thoughts though. I'm planning on seeing it within the next few weeks as well. The only thing that bothers me is Daniel Craig's comments that there is no way he would do another one, even though he's under contract for one more. Unless I'm totally wrong though, I think that had more to do with the physical toll on his body and how long it took to finalize the movie.

The text reviews that I've seen on here are really well-written and proper analyses of a game and pros and cons of its mechanics. I wouldn't worry about it becoming overly subjective.
