Yes, it is still over a good month away, but the fact of the matter is this: There is really no bigger international event in today's world than the World Cup. Yes, bigger than the superbowl, bigger than the Rugby finals (because we all know Rugby is just an orgy with a ball thrown in the scrum Wink ), and even bigger than the olympics. I honestly hate soccer, being an American and also being a long time player of contact football, but there is honestly no comparison to the rush I get from being in the midst of a soccer match crowd, and even though all the countries are gunning at each other for the title, a rush of peace can be felt all over the stadium as the teams compete for their country's honor.

I wrote a stanza a while back about the world cup that I thought I'd share with you all (believe me, this is nothing compared to the other full scale poems I've written, but it's short and sweet).

22 players, out on the grass
Kick and dribble, trap and pass
Sprint and run, tackle and fall
All for the love of the sacred ball

I wish I could attend, but I don't know how the hell I'm going to get to South Africa, and tickets for the matches are going to be impossible to come by. So I guess I'll be laying back and watching from Chicago, and until June 11th when everything kicks off, I have this trailer to keep me satisfied.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXlBSlyU8xY

Anyone here attending the world cup? Who are you pulling for? Will you be watching?

As I'm from Panama, football, or soccer as you prefer, is in my blood. Again our team didn't classified but well, honestly, they suck.
As a long time tradition, me and my friends are making bets on how the Cup is going to fold up; on 2006, my bets won me $60 as I was the only one who said Italy was going to win instead of Brazil.
I think I'll be watching (since its the only thing that will be broadcasted), and sincerely I support Italy this year as well, thou the French and Spaniards look pretty strong this year.

I'm with you James, I'm also placing some bets on the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
But there's more ways than just betting on the world cup winner. I'll usually look at all world cup betting odds for the different teams and then wager on a number of different matches depending on where I think the bookies have got it wrong. Not necessarily big amounts either but rather spread them out. Whether my favorite team wins or not is a different matter all-together.

Well, here in Britain, we are settling into a pattern we have been doing for the past 44 years. Basically, it boils down to getting extremely patriotic at the start of the World Cup, before the entire country sort of slips into a submissive regret as we realize, yet again, we won't have a snowballs chance in hell. Also on the note that my country seems to fail epically at everything international we do....last place in Eurovision...really Europe?

but how do you think i would feel if i cared? Sweden didn't even make it to the finals

I'll be watching pretty much every match, depite it starting in the middle of my GCSEs. All the big matches are after they've finished so it's all good Laughing out loud

Of course, I'm supporting England and think this year is one of our best chances (although some of the squad decisions are a bit dodgy)

Come on England!!! Laughing out loud

I think England has a pretty good team, but Terry is the captain, and nobody seems to like that. I think that the cup stays in Europe this year, Spain, Holland or maybe even Italy, thou England has pretty good chances too. As to America, Argentina could make some good competition, and Brasil... meh, don't think they are going anywere.

I hope Ivory Coast wins it all, though. I think they're playing for the most out of all the teams.

Terry isn't the captain anymore because he got with one of Chelsea's other player's (Wayne Bridge) girlfriend Tongue that's why no one likes him and why he lost the captaincy Smile

Keep dreaming FLaE! England have looked poor recently but I reckon we'll step it up and win 3-1 Laughing out loud Tongue

The winners, for me, will be England, Holland or Italy again Smile

Well, so much for my hopes about Ivory Coast. They just lost Didier Drogba due to a broken arm training against Japan. That's really unfortunate, he helped put the Civil War in the Ivory Coast on pause 4 years ago by getting Ivory Coast into the tournament.

I guess now I'm just rooting for America, but I also kind of want South Africa to win it as well. I think it would be great for Nelson Mandela to get to see his country win the event he promised the people he would bring to South Africa.

Yeah I've seen that. my friend thought it was a new kind of Mars bar but then realised it was just for the World Cup Tongue nd the new ad with Barnes reprising his World in Motion rap role Laughing out loud

yeah its pretty unfortunate for Drogba. Kind of blows Cote d'Ivoire's chances, especially seeing as there in the group fo death this year. Hope they still manage to get through Smile

I think Spain will win. Their team is just amazingly good since they won the European Championship in 2008. I'm from Holland, and some people say we're gonna win, but it would be great if we reach the quarter final, with all our humiliation in the past... Shy

Yeah Spain are brilliant. I predict a Spain Brazil final with Spain winning. Obviously I want Spain Enlcand or Germany England with England winning though.

Holland are good but I think you might miss out again. The most successful team never to win the World Cup... Smile

Not Britian fail. England Fail. People from England, Wales and Scotland would be horrified to be collected together as supporting the same football team.

Not really a fail either tbf. Rob green made an awful mistake and Heskey should have scored but we were still far better. I think we'll win the group on goal difference or Slovenia will draw with USA.

You realize this just now?

Anyway, I'm worried. Buffon seems to have an injury and has been taken out from the titular roster until further notice. This might be very bad news for Italy.

Wow France. Just wow. Your failure astounds me. First you cheat Ireland out of a World Cup spot, and then what do you do with it? You fall apart, the director resigns, the players refuse to train, the coaches are at each other's throats, and to top it all off you're facing disqualification. Way to go!

Have you guys heard about Pavlos Joseph? He was an England fan, went looking for the toliet, and ended up wandering into the England dressing room minutes after Prince William and Prince Harry had left. Pavlos told them he was very disappointed in them and then South African police have arrested him, and he now faces a year in a South African jail for trespassing, with him and his entire family banned from continuing to attend this years World Cup. In some ways, its understandable, as if it had been a couple of minutes earlier, he could have been a security risk to the Princes, but really, it was an innocent mistake Sad .

Germany was crushed by Servia lately. The only ones doing a good job are Argentina and the Netherlands. This is a crappy World Cup. And England-Algeria was the most boring game EVER! Except for this moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hpSGaEBju8 You're right, USA should've won, Slovenia gave it all away.

This world cup has been like the war(s) really:

Italy left early, America came in and were strong late on, England are fighting it out with Germany and France din't even put up a fight and got destroyed Tongue

And then of course the quarter finals will be like the Falklands War. Its a shame there's no Iraq or Afghanistan for the Final! Laughing out loud

Sorry if this offends anyone. Its just meant as a joke.

Can you believe that both, campion and sub-champion are already out of the world and are last in their respective groups?
I really thought this cup would be for Europe, but seems I wo¿ill have to take the dust off my Argentina shirt, my blood boils just at the thought. Stupid Argentinians.

Anyway I'm impressed by the performance of the americans in the World Cup. 7 out of the 8 qualifiers are already advancing to the next round. Most of them even first.

Yeah, that disallowed goal was ridiculous. In a way, I guess it's a relief that it didn't determine the outcome of the game. That would have been heartbreaking indeed.

In the end though Ghana were better than the USA. They deserved to win IMO.

And England were just useless. Wayne Rooney is absolutely appalling. To me he looks injured/overweight as he's so slow. The disallowed goal was ridiculous though. Despite not changing the ultimate outcome, it was definitely important because, at 2-2, I think we'd have played more confidently. I reckon we'd still have narrowly lost though Sad

I'm now rooting for Ghana and japan as they're underdogs but still have a good chance of doing well Smile

Not at all, they just spent the whole game killing clock by kicking the ball around and faking injuries. I actually recall an "injury" right after the extra time goal in which a Ghana player cried out in pain for 5 minutes, was put ON A STRETCHER, carried off the field, and once off the field, got up unassisted and walked back to the bench with a smile on his face. The way they won that game wasn't through skill, it was through one mistake by Tim Howard and the rest of the time behaving like a bunch of childish pussies.

That being said, there were plenty of moments for the US to win the game in regulation. When Auditore (sorry, Alditore Wink ) missed that goal from the seat of his pants with no one in the goal I was heartbroken. And then there was that white guy (his name eludes me right now) who had the ball 1v1 with Ghana's keeper and instead of kicking it up or to the side like the Ghana's striker did, he instead kicked it right to the keeper and lost the chance to score. That was really the only offensive mistake the US made during the game. Ghana did not in ANY sense deserve to win that game.
