Is it because it's another annualized release of a reskinned game?
No. That doesn't bother me, too much.
Is it because it can't involve the Assassin Brotherhood because it takes place 400 years before Bayek founds it?
No. That doesn't bother me.
Is it because I didn't like Origins and Odyssey is going to build on what was done?
No. I rather liked Origins.
Is it because there will invariably be some stupid ship mission?
No. I deal with that in other games too.
Is it because I LIKED Origins and want that to be the lasting impression of the series for me in the future?
No. I'd gladly take more.
Is it because the Present Day story-lines that made me like the series from the beginning have been abandoned?
No. Those were abandoned long ago and I keep coming back.
Is it because I'm too busy to devote days of my life to another game?
No. Well, maybe.
So why might I not play this game? A game that will probably look stellar, go to a new place in history, and be fun as all get out to play?
My first child is due October 17, and Assassin's Creed Odyssey just isn't that high on my priority list right now.
I myself don't look forward to playing Odyssey anytime soon because of your first stated reason. Congratulations on bringing another assassin into the world.
Expected a huge analysis/critique on the series, but this is cool too!
Seriously, congratulations man. Awesome news.

God damn, congrats dude!
Congrats on becoming a real life "Mentor" to a little Assassin recruit.
Congrats, Cheese, that is awesome news. Hope you and your lady are doing well.
That's a damn good reason, Cheese. I won't be starting Odyssey for a while because I still haven't finished Origins!
Oh man, sorry i wasn't here to see this. Congratulations!
I also didn't play oddessy and don't plan to, but i like your reasons more than mine
For what it's worth I super do not recommend the game if you uh, enjoy Assassin's Creed >_>
I watched the cutscenes of the various endings on YouTube and reached the same conclusion.
Yeah, even though I got it in a sale it wasn't worth it, in fact it might be the only AC game I never finished.
Feel like Valhalla isn't gonna be different but who knows, Ashraf Ismail might make it more enjoyable.
We'll see in the coming days.
I ended up getting it for $30 with all season pass dlc and whatnot this week. The thing that most interests me is the remaster of ACIII and Liberation that came with it. But I'll play the main quest eventually.
Welp - I lied.
I started playing Odyssey last week and have put in about 10 hours. I'm really enjoying the gameplay. I'm not a huge fan of the added RPG elements (and wish I would have known you couldn't unengrave something - oh well), but the dialogue options and choices are growing on me... trying to play a person of the people first and foremost, and not an asshole that swings a sword at everything.
I don't know what the story is, but it's not an assassin game. More like, Mercenary's Whims than Assassin's Creed.
I haven't delved too much into naval combat, as I've always hated it in AC games... but I did recruit the first Athenian Leader (Stargazer?) to be on my fleet rather than kill him. He ended up being a legendary lieutenant, whatever that means. Maybe I'll try to recruit all the leaders, captains, etc possible rather than kill them.
I'm at a loss on the various assigned abilities and prefer to go for the passive ones when possible... but I do see I can always respec later. I wish the third loadout weren't so much more expensive than the first one, but I'm glad I have 2 now, for active combat and sneaking.
I wish you could unequip/equip from the Blacksmith menu so you didn't have to go back and forth when you're moving your gear around and upgrading it. I like that you can't accidentally scrap or sell something you have equiped, but wish there was a button you could long press to unequip it to make the whole process smoother.
All in all, I'm having fun playing the game, whatever the game is anyway.

I've played 16 hours and just figured out why people keep saying it's not an assassin game. There are no big assassinations! No spoilers here: So far there have been two occasions when it said "go assassinate this guy". Both times it was a fight to the death (no opportunity for stealth), one didn't even have a cutscene.
Assassin's Creed Lite: No assassinations, less filling.
I've now put inside 16+ hours of game time. Level 15. In the third area of the main story and finally decided to track down the quests involved after playing around in the towns completing things.
There is no sense of honor or creed. Just doing what you can to make money and progress. I guess now I'm trying to find family, or something. I'm trying to play it low key on the murdering people thing ... letting people live instead of kill them, letting them bribe me to let them live, etc... also, not taking money from the people when possible. Trying to be a weapon for the populace. But that's my choice of a creed, there are no rules, really. Everything is Permitted, i guess.
Can someone remind me how present day ended in Origins? Layla worked for Abstergo, but went rogue and relived Bayek/Aya's memories. She never checked in, so they sent an extraction team to her. She killed the Abstergo team, went back into the Animus. Woke up to William Miles/Assassins, right? Then what? What was the endgame in Origins again? Did they track down a vault or an artifact of some kind that I'm not remembering? Did she actually join the Assassins?
The reason I ask is that Odyssey seems a bit disjointed. She's full fledged running an Assassin cell now? It's been like a year or two, tops, right?
Thanks in advance.
From what I remember the main storyline ended with a series of scenes,
This game took the spot of "black sheep" of the AC family in my opinion.
The way Origins ends in Present Day is with William and Layla waiting for a Helicopter that will apparently take them to Alexandria. The helicopter never comes. Whether she joins the Assassins or not is left up in the air. Until Odyssey rolls around, where it's revealed that somehow, apparently, she is now the leader of her particular Assassin Cell. William is nowhere to be seen, heard, or found in Odyssey either. You didn't miss anything. It literally is just like that.
Thank god for Darby McDevitt returning to write Valhalla, the last two times we saw him were on Black Flag and Revelations.

It must have taken that spot away from Unity.

Clearly neither of you played Black Flag.
I've put like 110 hours into this game. Just hit level 60 or so. Still have several regions to unlock, let alone complete... plus any/all the dlc storylines. The world is really fun to play around in, though. Still enjoying it, even if some of the locations like camps/forts feel a little recycled/repetitive at times.
I like that you can pursue different objectives, too. There have been some days I've devoted to cultist hunting (like today, I hunted the gods of the Aegean sea, for example), others to exploring/clearing a new region, and other days devoted to one of the storylines, like tracking down artifacts for the atlantis questline or picking one of the blue dlc stories to complete like a mini campaign.
I do wish that the cultist clues were by way of memory corridor rather than an icon that tells you to search through 3 levels of menu to read small text in a letter though.
Side note. They don't scale the arena. I just got to it. Level 61 with the Minotaur's axe and the Cyclops's axe. One shot kills for many of the low enemies. Cake walks even when they re-level to 50 after beating them all once.
I took a week off work to get into this, loving it. Same experience as you Double, at level 63 right now and havent touched most of the main missions.
You guys must like to do quests, because I leveled up pretty slow for a while, until I finally started the message board quests to farm orichalcum.

Yep, I did a lot of message board stuff early to help me explore and get familiar with areas. I still do them. I mostly focus on Contracts, or at least Bounty missions that relate to Contracts.
I did it. Finished the game and all DLC, and got all trophies... 202 hours on the save file...

Now immediately do all that for Valhalla and you can finally call yourself a TRUE gamer.
