Just noticed this watching one of the trailers: Ezio is narrating as the scenes of his father and brothers' execution, which was in 1476, is shown. He takls about how he discovered what his destiny was to be "thirty years ago", which would imply that he's looking back from 1506.
But the game doesn't actually take us that far, does it? It ends with him in Rome in 1499 -- the novelization has this happening in 1503, the year that Rodrigo actually died -- and then that's it for ACII.
If AC:B is going to finish Ezio's story, will it only last for three years of Ezio's life, giving him some kind of closure from which he looks back on what happened in 1476 as a 17-year-old? Or was the "thirty years ago" something from the initial planning stages, which was then changed because the main enemy only lives another 27 years? Or something else entirely?
1506 - Pope Julius II personally leads the Papal guards against the French invaders of Italy...? He was the pope after Borgia and the two were big rivals apparently. He accused Borgia of becoming Pope by suspcious means.
Kind of significant I guess, although it may be completely irrelevant.
Here's the Wiki page for 1506. See if any significant real-life events happen then

EDIT: It was also the year in which the Papal Swiss Guard was founded and the year Pope Julius II laid the foundation stone of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
Game goes until at least 1507, when Ceseare Borgia died in Spain (which was teasered in the Story video).
"30 years" was just a generalization. People are rarely exact when telling stories.
Brotherhood hadn't even been thought of when AC2 was written, so it's highly unlikely that AC2 trailer with the voiceover was meant to take place after the events in Brotherhood (which hadn't even been written yet).
Don't read so much into things. Not every single detail of things like video games are planned out from day-one.

not entirely true. i distinctly remember reading/watching that they planned to have rome in the first game but it was bigger than the whole rest of it so they were forced to make it a complete separete game instead.
and besides, it's not implausible to think they figured out the whole plot early

I think it's pretty obvious from the way things turned out, otherwise they wouldn't have used something like "30 years".
Besides, they may have originally intended to include Rome, but it would have had to have been cut awfully early. There's no way that was a last-second cut. Based on all the interviews that were out during AC2's development and after its release, it's pretty clear to me that Brotherhood had not been written yet.
