In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, we come across with many Leonardo's war machine. Here's some fact and fiction I dug up from the net.
Machine Gun
You know, this reminds me of Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, where you hop onto a Humvee and cut a path of carnage with the 50 caliber machine gun. In actually fact, Leonardo did invented the machine gun. However, it looks like this:
The multi-barrels feature gives the gun an edge to massacre people.
Bomber
From what I know, Leonardo invented the flying machine, but not a bomber. In my opinion, the in-game bomber design simply just can't work out. Not something very sophisticate, just use some common sense. How can you fire at people while both of your hands are grabbing the beam that controls the machine? Furthermore, you need to reload that sucker after every shot. And, how much ammo can you carry if you are clinging on something that relies on bonfire to boost? Plus, the ammo has to be special, it is no a projectile that simply just kill things, it is something that will create a burning spot upon contact, pretty much like a Renaissance napalm bomb, which I think it can't be created by the technology at that time. Lastly, this design is impractical if the designated area is soaked with water after a rain. So I think the bomber is fictional.
Naval Cannon
Hehe! This one looks like a mini-MRLS mounted on a boat. And yes, Leonardo did invented a naval cannon. Here's how it looks like:
Tank
Out of so many war machine, I think the tank is the most realistic. Ya, Leonardo did invented that, and the in-game design is the same as the original sketches.
And before I end this thread, there are several more Leonardo's machine that are omitted by Ubisoft.
Renaissance Robot
Cluster Bomb
Scythed Chariots
Barrage Cannon
Wall Defense
Helicopter
Giant crossbow
Improved Catapult
Improved Fortress
Dismountable Cannon
Siege Weapon
There are more inventions that I can't get a picture like the scuba diving gears and the revolving bridge. And before you guys ask, yes, Leonardo invented the parachute. Isn't he a genius?

You'd think Ubisoft would have tried to mimick each machine a little more closely. They probably focused on the tank more than anything else.
he made cluster bombs? really?
and would that robot do anything?
Impressive researching as always! Now I'm a bit smarter! Hooray!
Seriously, I was sort of hoping Ubisoft would make more of those Leonardo missions. That scythe chariot looked amazing! Think about it - just riding your horses on the battlefield while people are being cut up into 2 just for being near your horses!
That fortress looks very similar to fuedal Japanese castles.
Sorry guys! I have been very busy lately so I didn't have time to post and reply thread. And now, I am back!
JoeyFogey: Ubisoft focus on the tank and ends up the tank mission being the hardest one...
ROB_88: The cluster bomb is found on 1 of his sketches. However sketches are still sketches, whether he really invented it or is it really work, is still unknown. The robot is for defensive purpose, I'm not sure how it works.
Vesferatu: Heh! It's always nice to be smart!
Icefire: Not quite. Feudal Japanese castle looks something like this...
