Just two more weeks until I move into my new house! The place we've been renting for the past three months is very near to Coconut Island, a small island off the coast of Oahu. You may know it better as Gilligan's Island. Here's a frame from the opening sequence of the classic TV series:

I took the following picture this morning, trying to match the camera angle:

Note that the two Norfolk pines have grown taller but the coconut tree appears to be the same height. Also there are several buildings there now. The island is home to the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. I've been out there once or twice (access is by invitation only - no tourism). They have ponds with hammerhead sharks. Don't slip!

A wider shot of the whole bay ruins the illusion of an "uncharted desert isle":

There's another familiar scene in the opening sequence of Gilligan's Island:

See the black yacht in the foreground? That's The Ruana. stabgal's family owned that yacht. In fact, she lived on it for a short time while it was still in the slip pictured here at the Ala Wai Harbor. The Ruana's sister ship The Tuana was featured in another TV series called Adventures in Paradise as the main character's schooner Tiki III.

You won't even feel the blade.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which

I love seeing things in fiction one second, and then seeing that they're totally (mostly) real.
Big draw for me, in anything.
Thanks for the thread stabby! Much appreciated Smile

I should add that Gilligan's Island was mostly filmed at CBS Studios in Los Angeles (the "lagoon" was a cold pond on the backlot). Only the opening/closing sequence and the pilot episode were shot on Oahu, and Coconut Island was only used for long shots.

The place I'm renting now is near the shore across from Coconut Island (I had to drive down the coast a ways to get these shots). It's not much to brag about - just a townhouse while we were shopping for our new home. The coolest feature is the koi pond that comes up to the back deck.

Thanks, James. This move should be easy. All of our stuff is still packed in boxes and there's plenty of room to put it in our new house. We're upsizing! The new place is awesome. It has a view of the ocean and on a clear day you can see neighbor islands: Molokai, Lanai and sometimes Maui.

You won't even feel the blade.

Still better than passing a beer pub, dominos, dunkin dounuts and karate class on the way home.

LOL - You guys crack me up. Laughing out loud

I've heard that The Tuana is living well in Fiji. The Ruana wasn't so lucky. A hotshot young sailor bought her and promptly sunk her off Na Pali Coast in an ill-advised attempt to sail around Kauai.

Wow that's just... sad. There there Rob, only 5 more months for summer.

Or... Care to exchange houses? It's so hot in here (Summer) I'm considering turning my house into a big industrial freezer.

It finally started snowing here. For the past 3 or so years, it hasn't snowed during Christmas. It now waits until January to have flurries. It kinda sucks when it feels like an icy cave of death outside when there's no snow on Christmas.

We haven't had any snow yet this winter; the past few years we've had quite a bit (by British standards).

Today was definitely the coldest day of this winter so far (I would say of the year but that's not much to boast about seeing as it's only January Tongue). The frost remained on the ground all day and I've just got back from a rather fun but chillingly cold football match with my friends. I love playing every Monday night but in weather like that I just be mad! Shy

I remember watching Gilligan's Island when I was really young. In fact I could probably list at least twenty episodes from memory. Earlier today I found the complete first season at a garage sale for only one dollar, so of course I had to get it.
