Help with making text italics, bold etc

I'm not sure how to make text appear in italics, or bold or anything like that. So for example if I wanted to make my signature appear in italics, what would I put beside it?
Is it the HTML tags things? If so which ones do what? Little confused here.

Look beneath the comment box where it says "Input format". That gives an overview of what tags are available. The easiest to use are called BBCode. Click on that link for a complete guide.
The short answer to your question is this:
Use the [b]b tag for bold text[/b] and the [i]i tag for italics[/i].
Use the b tag for bold text and the i tag for italics.
See how that works?
