Seems to me like the developers have their work cut out for them in incorporating more modern firearms into the game without ruining the assassin feel of it.
I'm not talking about primitive 15th-16th century single-shot arquebuses. Firearms were getting more sophisticated even going into the 18-19th centuries, around the time of the French Revolution (a heavily rumored place and time for AC3). Sophisticated enough that they at least partially neutralized traditional assassin's techniques (stealth, free running, bladed weapons, etc). Not that they wouldn't have a place; but it's hard to approach someone for a kill from 100 yards away and he spots you, and he's got a gun. And that's to say nothing of modern semi and fully automatic weapons, as it pertains to Desmond.
So how are they going to incorporate them into the next game? They obviously can't ignore them. They can't (or rather shouldn't) make the new assassin a bullet sponge, able to absorb 10 shots unfazed, even with armor. Yet at the same time, there's a balance that needs to be struck in gameplay. You can't make it too tough, either. It's still a game, after all, meant to be FUN, not frustrating.
For starters, I'd say greatly reduce the number of health squares. Nowhere near what the Armor of Altair or the Armor of Brutus gave you. You get marginal health boosts from armor and ever slightly better boosts as your armor improves. No taking medicine and all of a sudden you're better again; healing over time. Maybe borrow the concept of limb damage from the fallout games? And make the cost of going to a doctor to get yourself fixed up REALLY expensive. Not the trivial 50 florins it was in AC2 and ACB.
Yeah, I know. I'm borrowing concepts from Fallout New Vegas Hardcore mode.
Maybe allow 1 shot kills, if the enemy scores a headshot on you. However, you'd have maybe 7-10 seconds warning to evade/take cover while the guard lines up and readies his shot. Or 3 body shots?
I hope they get this part right. They need to bring back a real danger factor for combat in AC3. That being missing was my one complaint with AC2/ACB.
One word: Snipers.
The game will probably be influenced by things like snipers but did you see Splinter Cell? Ubisoft basically ruined their own series with their own game. Splinter cell could have possibly been Ac3 or any assassins creed in the future... with some minor adjustments.
I'm expecting snipers and hand guns... Also, a LOT more disguises. The hidden blade will go on, but the pistol is probably going to be a lot more important with more gun fights.
Reminds me of Syphon Filter games.
I always thought if they let you use the PoE in the game then it'd serve as a cloaking device of sorts. A cloaking device with a very long recharge time ofcorse but that would definatly solve some of the issues being brought up here.
We've seen both Al Mualim and Rodrigo Borgia use the PoE to make themselves invisible so it's totally possible.
I've been hoping that you could use the Piece out of combat to make your own blend group. It'd be a more sensible use for it than whatever that sort of spongey kill ray was.
If we're allowed to use the Apple, that would just seem too easy. Even though it would need to be recharged, players would keep using it to bypass otherwise tough opponents. There's no challenge. I say it shouldn't be used in AC3 except for the finale with Desmond in the present day.
One of the next games will have more uses of guns, there's no doubt about that. Just think of how many far range attacks there were in Brotherhood: Hidden gun, throwing knives, poison darts, crossbow, arrow storm, even throwing spears and heavy weapons.
I feel so stupid for making that post on Calvar's topic.

Draco I don't wan't to cause any flame war but could you explain to me how Conviction ruined the splinter Cell series.
I thought that game was amazing, actually.
I thought that game was amazing, actually.
Me too. Maybe it didn't have the same mechanics of 'study your prey for half-hour before you actually jump into the action' but that's what makes Conviction different and great in its own way, by making you have to execute fast moves and think quickly to take out even up to 15 guards in a room that has barely a few shadows.
Conviction was... meh. It's not an altogether bad game, but it does nearly everything for you. It takes no skill to take out an enemy by hand, just bash B until they are close enough. There's the mark and execute function, which takes care of up to 4 enemies at once. Going from cover to cover is easy, just a button press. The only thing you have to do is to shoot when you don't have the ability to M&E.
I need to word my sentences better. I meant Splinter Cell will ruin ASSASSINS CREED.. It would have been the perfect game for a futuristic assassin.
