Assassin's Creed II is one of the games Microsoft will be offering for free download in July. All you need is a current membership to Xbox Live Gold and an Xbox with a hard drive. It's a new program some are calling "Games for Gold".
The free title for June is Fable 3. In July you can pick up Halo 3 (as well as AC2). There will be two new titles per month through December. If you ever need to delete one to free up some space, the marketplace will remember that you "own" it so you can re-download in the future.

I've seen this. I'm actually excited. Even though I will likely never touch most of the games, at least they'll be in my library if I ever want to.
Update: The free download for July 1 is Defence Grid. Evidently Microsoft only promised that AC2 and Halo 3 would be available sometime before the program ends on December 31. The press assumed that they would be the first titles offered. Now Microsoft is saying the program may be extended beyond the end of 2013:

Although I'll probably never play Defense Grid (especially since I just got Skyrim, and if I enjoy that I may not play much of anything else this summer), I may as well download it for free just in case...
AC2 is July 16 free game. http://news.xbox.com/2013/07/games-ac-july-xbox-live
I think most of us have already bought AC2.

Sell it back to gamestop for a few quarters then just download the game from Games for Gold and use all your saves as you normally would.
One unanticipated consequence of Games for Gold: Since July 15 the number of daily visitors to The Hidden Blade has nearly doubled. It's mostly due to people searching for AC2 feathers but we also picked up some new viewers thanks to a few well-placed social links by Phi and YurkleNorf. Thanks guys!
hopefully a few trickle over into the forums!
August's first title: Crackdown
Enforce justice by any means necessary in Pacific City, a crime-ridden urban center built to encourage the exploration of the full width, depth and height of the city. Coupled with highly innovative co-op gameplay--a genre first--and an interactive world where nearly anything can be used as a weapon, gamers will be able to create a volatile cocktail of judicial oppression as they clean up the streets.

I've downloaded it but haven't played it. Has anyone played this game in the past? Did you have fun?

I downloaded it and we're playing the multiplayer together, McStab. This is a fact.
Sounds good to me, Joey. Seems like an open world game, so if multiplayer works, AC has no excuse.
There is a problem though: I am going on vacation from Aug 10 to Aug 17 so won't be able to play in there.

No worries, man.

I'll be doing some ACBF reconnaissance. Going to the Dominican Republic for a week. Going to do some diving/find some PoEs/etc.
I'll be downloading/playing crackdown probably sometime in the next couple days, Joey. Just so you know.

Hopefully my Xbox Gold is still available.
