i just read that brooms, fishing rods, rakes, garden hoes, broken spears can be used as weapons. havent confirmed any of it.
It's true. And if you break the long ones (counter-attack a Brute with it), you can pick up the stick end and keep it if you don't have a main weapon.
Before anyone gets excited about doing special "uncommon weapon" runs through the game, keep in mind that you'll be required to pick them up from somewhere every time you want to use them first. You cannot disarm yourself until you reach a certain point in the game, which comes just before the mid-point of the story. So that means that you can't actually keep one of these weapons until that point. But if you want to play Street Cleaner Ezio and run around with a sheathed broom for the second half of the game, you go right ahead.
Its fun using a broom and running around beating people with it =]

It's just too bad they didn't make a custom sound for non-metal weapons. It makes such a distinctive metal 'clank' that it seems like it's really a steel weapon disguised as a broom.

Are you talking about getting disarmed by brutes? I'm on my second playthrough, over 40 hours played, and that only happened to me once.
Maybe secretly its a steel broom of doom =]

I was, but I forgot about the disarm trick in the villa training ring. That can be done any time after S3M3. But you still cannot keep any of these non-weapons until you can break them, and that requires a Brute. Brutes first appear in Sequence 5.
of course
