So I finally finished the setup for recording through my DVD player, rather than with a camera. I got the cables and got some DVDR's (couldn't find RW's) and set out to record. I still need to tweak the settings a bit, but the quality is very good for SD. I recorded a bit of gameplay (about half an hour) and then finalized the disk, as is the general process.
Then I went over to my computer and put the disk in. This is when problems started to appear: the DVD player refused to play it and I couldn't rip it. However, once I opened VLC and told it to play the disk, it worked just fine (aside from some issues that are to be fixed with the settings).
The recorder I'm using is a Philips DVDR75. The DVD's are pretty much the most basic DVD's you can get. I work on a Mac, OSX 10.6.8. VLC's version number is 1.1.11 (Intel 64 bit).
Help is appreciated.
The fact that VLC can play it is a good sign. The data is there. You just need to rip it.
What software are you trying to use for ripping? I don't know much about Mac's. Perhaps someone here can recommend a ripper application.
I've tried doing it with OSX's built-in disk utility (yeah, it can do that) and Mac the Ripper.
Update: I tried ripping it with VLC, both on a Mac and a Windows box. Neither would work, so I guess the disk really is broken. Oh well.
