Electric automobiles might be required to make noise
Electric cars are notoriously quiet. This is not usually a feature, but certainly a side benefit. Electric and hybrid vehicles are the target of some new legislation. The legislation would require these quiet cars to make more noise. Hybrid automobiles and electric automobiles could be made noisier with after-market parts. This equipment, however, may soon become mandatory.
The difficulties with silent vehicles
Hybrids and electric vehicles tend to be quite quiet when going slow. At speeds above 20 miles per hour, the air resistance against the automobile does make some noise, but it is generally not as loud as gasoline-powered engines. While this is great news for sound pollution, it is bad news for many of those who rely on cars making sound. Pedestrians, cyclists and sight-impaired individuals often cannot identify which direction a hybrid or electric automobile is coming from until they're very close. A hybrid or electric car is two times more likely to hit a pedestrian. This is mostly only when it is going at very slow speeds.
Vehicle companies addressing the issue
The car sound issue is one that car businesses such as Nissan are working on. The Nissan Motors Leaf is reportedly going to be making a "futuristic buzzing noise" in later models. Separate businesses, for instance Lotus Engineering, are developing kits that add realistic motor rumbling to hybrid automobiles. It is simple to change a Prius with the kits. You can sound like a race car sometimes. Kits are also available to create 8- and 12-cylinder automobile sounds, so technology is already available to add noise to quiet hybrids and electric cars.
International criteria to create
A requirement for automobile sound might be put together by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The European Union also has some troubles with it. It is considering regulation similar to this. Some automobile makers have considered sounds based on natural noises, but many sight-impaired advocacy groups argue against this option. The Society of Automotive Engineers is working to create what it hopes will be worldwide standards for electric and hybrid noise to ease the transition and prevent a virtual cacophony of various electronic noise on highways and freeways.

And this has anything to do with anything because...? Is this another spambot?
I'm thinking spambot. It's a tough call because the topic is in the proper forum and not loaded with commercial links.
Hey, Blake. If you're a human please speak up. Otherwise your account will be blocked.
That's what made me wonder. Quite unusual for a bot to create a new, correctly-categorised thread and not post a load of links.
In the earthquake thread 'he' has posted about automobiles again and the link to the Japan earthquake is very vague/non-existent. There's also a link to a dodgy loans website which is barely connected too. Almost certainly a spambot.
Despite it being a spambot, can't resist this as evidence:
I've never seen anybody talk about hybrid cars this much. My money's on a spambot.
We should hold money polls on here that bet on whether new members on here are spambots or not.
Yeah ima go with spam bot...
I'M a spambot.
I'm just an incredibly on-topic spambot.
ASSASSIN'S CREED! HYBRID CARS! STAB SHOOT PUNCH!
See?
Noooooo! I was going to use this one. You beat me to it. Mind you, of course you beat me - you are a spambot after all

And a bloody good one too, old bean. I say, what?
(Notice what I did there? Tailor my message for you, a person of England?)
JANE AUSTEN! TALLY HO! BRING ME MY BOW OF BURNING GOLD!
I say, what?
I think there's a bug in Lisa's programming
Perhaps the spambots are the sane ones and we are the ones who are spamming (they do talk about things that matter while our talk is random and unnecessary). It's MGS2 all over again, with digital information being censored for social sanity.

You're giving me a headache.
HOW DO WE KNOW WE ARE NOT THE SPAMBOTS AND HE IS THE HUMAN!
Well, last time I checked I had a pulse, don't know about the rest of you...

Not me. I've been clinically dead for months.
Hmmm... I don't know if I ever was alive.
I'm not dead, I just have a bug in my programming.
I'm a real boy.
I'm a real boy.
I get the reference, but can't think of an appropiate response. >.<

That alone is impressive. I'm not sure there is an appropriate response.
