I feel terrible for wanting this after watching Restrepo, but my god, this could quite possibly be the greatest shooter ever made.
No words... just watch:
It will be awesome. Loved Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3 will be even more awesome if my computer can even handle it.
Never really been a fan of "realistic" shooters...
Until I saw the first episode of Fault Line.
Must have, will get. Nuff' said.
The only problem is that I don't have a strong enough computer to run it smoothly so I'll have to stick with the Xbox.
I remember seeing the TV trailer for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (the one with the buggy being chased and shot at by all manner of enemies) and thinking, "My goodenss this game looks cool," but I never ended up buying it. I;ve always stuck to CoD for shooters (admittedly because of all the hype) but they seem to be getting worse.
Even though they aren't actually direct sequels to this game, I might pick up B:BC and B:BC 2 and then get Battlefield 3 when the price drops. It looks like a great series
I just saw a commercial for Battlefield 3 last night on tv. I have never been a huge fan of first person shooters (except for 007: Goldeneye), but this one looks like it might be worth a play. The commercial noted that it was actual game footage. If the game is as life-like as the trailer (unlike most games which just show cut scenes in their trailers), then I might pony up the $60 for it.

I picked up BC2 when MW2 disappointed me, and I loved it. CoD can't compare when I can reduce a building to rubble. Also, the community (at least on PC) is much more cooperative and efficient.
Yeah I've heard the destruction of the environment in these games is very cool
CoD has left me rather disenchanted recently and I doubt I'll get the next one soon after release. I tend to prefer singleplayer/campaign to online anyway, and loved the World at War campaign but MW2 and Black Ops are poor. If a game has both a good campaign and online (BC by the sounds of it) I'm happy. I'll probably have a look at BC after my exams

BC2 campaign was decent. Not fabulous, but OK. I personally liked the Black Ops narrative, jsut the missions were stale, like the MW2 missions. Too much tunnel vision, BC2 also has a bit of tunnel vision, but they give you flanking routes and such, which is all I ask for.
It can be picked up pretty cheap now so I think it'll be worth it. Thanks for the info about it
Lifelike or not, the basic gameplay of modern military shooters looks like it's intact in this trailer. I've already played less pretty versions of this game.

Are those less pretty games with 96% destructibility (96% in BF:BC2, at least)??
The other thing is modern military shooters put you in a position to go commando. They're trying too hard to be like Halo. Battlefield is different in that it revolves around squad unity and cooperation. If everyone runs around spraying and praying then their team gets squashed.
The graphics that make this game look like a damn live-action movie are just icing on the cake.
Technically spraying and praying doesn't work in any good competitive game, including Halo, but yes, Battlefield BC2 was another game that offered the same level of destruction. It didn't make the game feel entirely different to me. No matter which walls will blow up when you shoot them, the actual mechanics of FPS's the way they are now are getting really stale to me. FPS's should be trying to make the new Portal, not in that it uses a specific mechanic, but that it's DIFFERENT from all the other mechanics that are out there.
Halo Reach was the last conventional FPS I bought, it was a great farewell to the series (under Bungie), and I'm never buying another normal FPS ever again. I admit that BF3 looks pretty, and the destructability is cool, but no amount of realism entrenched in established mechanics will beat playing something like Mirror's Edge, Portal, or maybe even Brink, at least for me. And sometimes it's good to go back to a third person game, or even a sidescroller.
I understand how you can be excited about this, but my enthusiasm has been sucked dry with repetition, and I don't want to contribute to the games industry getting far to comfortable with doing what has been done before but slicker.

Actually, the spray and pray comment was meant to be a shot at the Call of Duty franchise, but I understand your gripes with FPS's in general. They're fun, but they're clogging up innovation and healthy competition in the industry overall.
Then again, you did say any good competitive game...
Well, that aside, I'm most impressed with the lighting for this game. It adds to the feeling of reality more than anything else.
At first I was a silly cod fan boy that thought that CoD was better than BF . I got bored of it and got Bad Company 2 and never looked back.

Yeah, if you need any more evidence that Modern Warfare is finally dead then just watch this:
That just confirmed which fps my money is going on this year epic!!
i am totally getting BF3, i just hope it looks remotely as good on Xbox as that demo-screening

Maybe it will look great, but that demo is running on PC so chances are that the 360 result won't be as impressive. Still, I'm in for the gameplay not the graphics, although it is a pretty good insentive too
i finally got around to pre-ordering it. gonna be awesome
I'm going to buy it for PS3. I wanted to but for PC but my computer can't handle it, so i'll stick with the PS3.
the Beta have finally been announced.
http://www.battlefield.com/battlefield3/1/beta
if you have MoH you can play on september 27.
it is also open for everyone else on september 29.
get hyped, NOW.
I couldn't believe when I read it on twitter.
I couldn't believe it when I saw it would be for X360 too.
I still can't believe BF3 will be released in about a month.
Will anybody else be playing on 360?
I'll be playing on PS3, Pre-ordered it so i can get the "Back to Karkand" map. ;D
This game will be incredibly amazing
So open beta starts tomorrow. Can barely wait for it!
What a surprise, the servers are already down hahahaha
really? i've had no problems at all
Yeah, I downloaded it yesterday. Couldn't load up a game. Damn EA!
I had no problem getting into a game. The only issue I had was not knowing what the hell I was doing once I started playing!
Lol Patrick... i watched some videos and like 99% of the people didn't know what to do on their first 5-15min of the game...
My friends were all talking about BF3 beta today, and suggest I play it. To bad I hate first person shooters now
Seriously, what are you supposed to do?! I understood that we were supposed to be attacking various bases or whatever but I only managed to get 2 kills and was killed about 15 times
I'm not exactly brilliant at FPS, especially online, but I was so bad! I prefer a simple Deathmatch/Team Deathmatch, to be honest. 'Rush' just made no sense to me - there seemed to be another team of allies (in blue) but I wasn't sure why they weren't just part of my squad, and the scoring system and end of the match seemed really erratic - something to do with the attacking team's tickets running out? I might read up on the mode a bit more and have another go
I'm not criticising the game - it seems pretty good - but I just had no idea what to do, other than shooting randomly. It didn't help that everyone else was much better too.

You're trying to plant bombs at objectives, and when you destroy them, you can move up the battlefield to destroy new ones. Destroying them all ends the game. Simple.
Yeah, thanks. I looked into it in a bit more detail on the Battlefiled Wiki and it makes more sense now. I suppose I'll probably get better with practise as I didn't seem to be getting anywhere near the M-COMs in the one game I played. I'll probably have another go tomorrow
for a description on what to do, i suggets you watch this video.
and i realised yesterday that i absolutely love the selective fire thing.
i more often than not see myself using single fire
Thanks, Rob!
Got into a game today, but someone had the same issue with their mic as mine has (screeching static noises) the whole match. I just wanted to play the game, so I ignored it. I kept dying, because I had no idea what I was doing. I tried joining James' games, but after that, I kept getting error messages from EA.
After a few hours of uber frustation because of EA servers, I have finally been able to play for a good amount of hours without any interruption. Let me tell you, Battlefield 3 IS A COMPLETE BLAST!
Sure its tends to be laggy sometimes, but it is surprisingly fun once you get into the action itself. Been lately playing with Recon and Assault classes. Been a medic is just fun as hell.
Anybody else interesting in playing on 360?
was playing a bit last night...and then i noticed the time was 6 in the morning.
at the end (after running out of ammo one round cause no one was playing support)i started using the support class alot more, and i love it.
screw the precision shots. it's all about firing everythingg i got in the enemys general direction.
and when you get to the second to last position it will just dominate if you get a good position
i tried the beta ..... and did horrible maybe because i haven't played a FPS game in over 6 months
I've been exactly the same, EA17. It's ahrd getting used to aiming again
I've started to enjoy the Recon class. Typicallly I'm pretty poor with a sniper rifle but I find it much easier than playing Assault on this Beta, especially in the dark - I just can't see anyone with a normal scope!
I'm playing the Beta.. I loved it ! My second game and i got 15 kills and 4 deaths..
And Patrick, answering your question about the team... the green ones are part of your Squad and the blue ones are part of your Team..
my second match i got 2 KILLS!!! of joy
It seems really hard to get kills but I'm getting better at avoiding deaths by playing Recon, especially when defending.
My best match so far, although it wasn't my highest-scoring, involved me getting 7 kills and 0 deaths. I lay in the same spot for the entire match, just above station B (the enemy were really poor and failed to destroy a single M-COM), and just sniped any runners who slipped through the net of the rest of my team.
It's a really good start Patrick, as you said you're not to good at FPS..
Keep practicing.
EDIT: EA17, lol ! 2 kills ??
i downloaded the beta a few days ago it's ok
Midnight!!!
I think I'm going to have to wait until Thursday.
FLAe what platform are you getting it for?
360 and PC
I'll be playing on the Xbox until I get my new computer, then its PC so I can play with my friends regardless of which platform they're on.
