As seen in the trailer in the link above its seems that we'll be time traveling to different centuries. One seeming to be paris in WWII which is crazy to think about an AC game set in WW2 even though it'll be brief section of the game. These sections are believed to be called "Bridges" and are to replace or be a part of the modern day sections with a Bridge section being after every 4 sequnces or so. I wonder what these have to do with the story because this puts this game on a whole new level mind-f*cking epic.
Ps.
Hey guys its been awhile how's it going?
After how bad Ubisoft messed up modern day I'll gladly take this new time period stuff in its place.

I quite liked Black Flag's modern day parts.
AC4's modern day stuff wasn't bad, just not my thing. I never bothered hacking emails or exploring Entertainment Abstergo. Just went straight back into the Animus.

It's fun for backstory and some of the later hacking mini-games actually got a little challenging. I hope they bring something similar back. I felt accomplished when I unlocked a new modern day secret.

And they added to the lore, not subtracted from it... if that makes sense.
For example, I loved the market research blurbs on "Easy-o Ow-da-tore" and "Al-tair ibin lad."

Yeah those were my favorite parts as I got some down times in Present time~
sadly seems like they keep getting fewer and fewer with how most people don't like 'em... :<
It sucks being the minority... Dx

Wait what?
Most people don't like the modern-day segments? How did I not know this, where have I been? I always loved these!
Modern Day was legitimately my favorite part of Assassin's Creed because it felt like it actually mattered. To explain further; sections of Past/Animus/Helix gameplay were amazing, and they definitely did shape the course of history, but the fact that it was set in the Past means it already happened. The fact that it already happened means that you realistically have a limit to how much you can be surprised. Modern Day does not have this issue and is therefore almost always fresh with plot-twists. This is also the reason why the First Civilization is my favorite part, tied with Modern Day. Because it allows freshness and surprise and shock to the Past/Animus segments. Also the First Civilization + Modern Day is what makes Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed. I will defend that to last breath and last blood drop.
I used to feel the same way as you Daz, but after the direction they ultimately went with the First Civilization and Desmond and all that stuff, I totally lost my taste for it.
The modern day stuff was great and mysterious in AC1, then we got too much info on it in AC2 and it took away a lot of the fun and intrigue. Then the subsequent games just milked it like a TV series that went on for too many seasons. Things got weird, then they got silly, then they got stupid. That's when I stopped caring.
In Black Flag, the modern day stuff didn't grab me at all and it really pained me to have to do it. Throw in the ship gameplay that I hate and an ancestor and location I don't care for and I never made it through AC4. I was really turned off by the entire franchise at that point.
I only got excited about Unity because it was a time period I was actually interested in and a lot of aspects of the game went back to more of an AC1 style and added some much-needed new features.
At this point, I'm okay without any of the modern day stuff. I no longer play this series for the story. Gameplay has always been the most important thing to me and it's still quite playable. Though the series' aging problems are more magnified every time a new game comes out that doesn't fix them, so even that has a shelf life that is nearing its expiry date.
I'll be keeping on with the DLC for Unity, but if the next game doesn't come with some big changes, I'll probably skip it.
