From PS3 Attitude:
After confirmation of a new Assassin’s Creed yesterday, more details on the title have emerged.
It will be a full game that will again star Ezio, will be developed by the same studios who developed the second game; which the majority of work was done by Ubisoft Montreal.
We guess this is not too much of a surprise since they clearly know how to make a fantastic game, and have the know-how to make the perfect follow-up.
And yes we do actually mean a “follow-up” because it will be a direct sequel to AC2.
Out by March of next year, we expect this one is pencilled in for a Christmas release, which would be very quick considering many people only just got AC2 for Christmas.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot had this to say today:
We have a new Assassin’s Creed that we expect will be a very high quality product that as well as an offline complement will have a multiplayer component. It is the same studios because it’s not only one studio creating the game, but an association of studios and they are working together to make it happen.

So what do you guys think...?
I for one am surprised it's still gonna be Ezio, no way did I see this coming... xD
I'mma explode with happiness. Screw getting similar games, I'm getting this. Continuation to Assassin's Creed 2? YESS. Maybe it's not Assassin's Creed THREE per se, but at least it's a sequel. What are they gonna call it, "Assassin's Creed: Online"? AA. I. NEED. I WANT!
is this AC3 or something similar to AC bloodlines that doesn't really matter?
Man, I would hate it if the game had "Online" trophies/achievements.. because I don't have internet on my PS3 and I really am a trophy whore.

Not sure, could be seeing it's a direct sequel to 2, but maybe that's how they planned to make three... D:
We'll have to wait a bit for more info before we know, but for all we know it could be... xD
Nah, this isn't AC3. If it was, they would have capitalized on advertising it as such, rather than simply calling it "a new Assassin's Creed". AC3 will be all new and will be huge. Given the success of the first two games, they're not gonna just 'phone in' the final chapter.
This one is a continuation of AC2, in the same vein as Final Fantasy X-2 was a continuation of Final Fantasy X. It's not the full sequel, but rather them using existing material (engine, models, animations, textures, et cetera) to create more gaming for us without needing to break the bank. With the engine and materials available from AC2, there's a lot they can still do with it before it gets tiring.
And think about it this way - giving us this extra hold-over could set up AC3 for a holiday 2012 release. Good timing, yes?
Hopefully they'll include the two DLC for AC2 in this new game, because I don't have internet on my PS3 and can't download it..

You can't just move it to another room or to somebody else's house once to download them?
Yeah, the great thing about PS3 is that it has wifi. You dont have to pay $80 more.
So it's gonna be called Assassin's Creed II Episodes [Though they may change that] guess it's another Bloodlines then... xD;
If bloodlines had been given a ps3 release, had a full, original dev team, it would have been brilliant. That is what this is.
Cool.
Assassins Creed 2.5?
I personally want to think that Ubi read my post and said "Damn, the guy makes a point. Hey, wait a minute, there's no copyright symbol! QUICKLY!!! Copy, paste, copyright... awesome. Now we have multiplayer!"
Yup, and I contributed to that post like a madman.
From what I've gathered, the game will be called "Assassins Creed II Episodes" and will once again feature Ezio, however it is not an expansion pack and I'm unaware if it takes place before or after discovery. It'll drop sometime between April this year and March next year. My guess will be November, but at this point my guess is as good as yours.
As for AC3, I've been hearing rumors of The Middle Ages (something to do with King Arthur), Feudal Japan/China, or the French Revolution. According to Ubi, the rumor of AC3 involving a female WWII ancestor has been ruled out, and Ubi has said they want Assassins Creed to take players to places not normally covered in video games. So far, I think they've done a pretty good job of that.
