Ubisoft has announced Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's Freedom Cry DLC will be released as a standalone title.

Freedom Cry will be available via download on PS4 and PS3 from February 18 in North America and February 19 in Europe, with a PC version on the way on February 25. The fact it's standalone means you won't need to buy Black Flag in order to play it, and both versions will cost $14.99.

We heard last week that claims over Ubisoft having planned the ending of the Assassin's Creed franchise are "not exactly true," according to one of the series' writers.

It's just a fucking money-grab. What a bunch of scumbags.

I actually don't think this is a terrible idea. Releasing Stand-Alone games is great for consumers. I actually think of this as less of a money-grab, because allowing consumers to grab Freedom Cry without needing the original game is a great option for those who just don't have Black Flag yet. If every company released DLC this way, that would be great. I think the last time something like this happened was with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Standalone DLC is probably the best kind of DLC, because you're guaranteed to get value for your cost.

When I was watching Freedom Cry playthroughs I thought that it would have potential as a standalone game. Still doesn't change that it's a money decision though. You won't see me buying it, I'll just watch playthroughs.

I don't have the DLC yet, but I'll probably end up buying the Stand-Alone version instead because it seems around the same-ish cost. I did want to play Freedom Cry anyway, I just haven't gotten it yet.

To me, it's too short for a standalone game. If it's between $5-$10, that makes sense.

Agreed. This would be great if it didn't cost so much. Reminds me of The Tyranny of George Washington dlc. Each of the three parts cost about ten or twenty dollars when I checked the psn store. Patrick's LOLWUT? Figures some of the only good dlcs would cost a lot.

When I think "scumbag", I think "Company that is giving the consumer more choice in what they want to buy."

Just so everyone is clear, this isn't a price hike for the existing DLC. It costs slightly more because obviously if you're buying it, you won't be buying the full game. Almost all DLC costs less than it would if the same content were being released on its own.
