Alright so, Altair's name means Bird. You all know that right?
The Arabic Name Altair is a FEMALE name. This means Altair's parents either were expecting a girl or he could have been Greek.
The Male version of Altair which is Altair (no change) is thought to be Latin with Greek origins.

So basically what I'm thinking is that some of the Greeks migrated to Cyprus along with Altairs ancestors leading to the birth of Altairs parents... and finally, Altair. Since they had Greek origins, it lead to his name being a Greek name.
Also, the current ethnic groups of Cyprus are... 77% Greek, 18% Turkish, 5% other
Which means Altair's family could have migrated to Cyprus at first...
Well it is possible. Supposedly Altair is son of a Christian woman and a Muslim man(redundancy hur dur hur) and there were many Christian communities in the Greek areas nearest to the Holy Land. Many sceneraios can come up to signal said woman as Greek or of Greek descendance.
Maybe Al Mualim, aware of Altair's background, chose that name as suiting for him.
Well my crazy mind has forumlated (about a week ago not just now) that Achilles of Ancient Greek Mythology is Altair's ancestor. We all know this is most likely false for 3 reasons. 1)Altair is a fiction character. 2)Achilles had no children 3)Achilles is possibly a fiction character to
If you think about it, Achilles has all the traits of Altair. Cares mostly for himself, gets the job done, brute strength (lol), rebellious, killing machine (:
My friend disagrees. He says it's possible that Odysseus was Altair's ancestor, considering Odysseus had children.
Very interesting what james89 mentioned, I also think that Al Mualim choose Altiar's name.
Altair doesn't care mostly for himself. All those save the citizen missions...
Altair's early years he cared for himself, as did Achilles. They both learned to care for others as time went on
Achille's name meant "grief of the people".... I'm sure he was a great person.
Wow u are a troll aren't you? Lol
can't blame a guy for having a crazy idea. We know Altair is 100% fiction, theres a 50-50 chance Achilles is fiction. Have a bit of fun in life, eh?
Altair barely knew his parents - his surname literally means "son of none". I feel that it devalues the fact that we have an Arabic, ostensibly Muslim hero in AC to say that "oh, yeah, and he was from Greece".
Alrite now im a bit ticked off. You all take this game way to seriously. It's a good game with an intriguing story-line yes. But Altair is FICTION. Achilles is probably fiction too. If Ubisoft made an announcement saying 'Altair's ancestor was George Washington' then there isn't a thing you can say to disprove it. Altair is FICTION
Altairs ancestor was Abraham Lincoln, get it right.
I said Abraham Lincoln
If you think about it, Achilles has all the traits of Altair. Cares mostly for himself, gets the job done, brute strength (lol), rebellious, killing machine (:
But...you're wrong! Let's look at this;
Achilles could hardly be construed as "getting the job done". He spent a fair portion of the Iliad refusing to fight, and only returned, killing Hector, to avenge Patroclus. He then died before Troy actually fell. He also didn't care mostly for himself, since one of his defining characteristics was his bond with Patroclus. And he wasn't even known for his brute strength, rather his skill. We're left with "rebellious killing machine", which, really, could describe anybody, from Jack Churchill to Nate Drake.
To be honest, I don't think you have that much of a grip on Altair's character, either. The very start of AC1 involves Altair failing to get the job done. Considering how he's overpowered by Robert in the beginning, held back by two lesser Assassins, and almost killed by a 70-year old man, I wouldn't call Altair's defining characteristic in combat his strength. And this last one is a bit nitpicky, but he isn't rebellious. He's defiant. Rebellious implies he wants to change the Assassin Order. He doesn't. At the beginning of the game, Altair was perfectly happy to do any mission Al Mualim sent him on, but simply unhappy to do it by the rules.
Well i'm done arguing with this, obviously im not as hardcore assassin's creed fans as all of you...and im kinda proud to say that. I'll just say that i agree with u that i don't really know the characters as much as you all do...or you all know them to much.
Excuse me if i simply play the game for the storyline, not carefully picking out every detail of every character
@Draco
sorry i snapped at you, honestly it's people like you that really get on my nerves, 'like you', not you
@hewki
I respect your knowledge and your judgement. This whole Achilles thing simply started from my random boredom. I didn't expect it to turn into a war. I do know quite a bit about Altair's personality, as do I Achilles. I suppose the way I wrote it down didn't look as well as in my mind. Apologies to this thread
ARROGANCE, Y U SO ARROGANT!
Hey Stabguy, you should have images reformatted to make them fit into the forum width...
Well my username didnt come from nowhere
Or, you know, you could just not post the giant meme.

NO, Draco. No, we did not need to see it...
Okay....
yup yup. Lack of grammar and inability to read minds makes an accurate understanding of someone's statements and information very difficult to achieve, however I envy the desire to amend such miscommunications, as it keeps everyone on errrbody elses "good side". If anything I'm still new to forum-temperament, (if that's spelled right) and you guys all seem to keep it together pretty well. Just remember, "It is easier to find errors than it is to verify meanings."
You guys all seem to keep it together pretty well.
And if we don't, Lisa is always there helpfully kick our asses in the proper direction.
Guess it's safe to say that THB has a mentor!
