This fix does no longer work. Dammit, YouTube. >.<
Hey guys. I really disliked the new YouTube frontpage, because I like to see at once which videos I still have to watch, and the new page is really messy. Hence, I figured out a way to get back to the old layout (with a new look). I am using FireFox for this.
The fix is simple. Install Redirector. Next, go to Add-ons (ctrl+shift+A) and open the Redirector preferences. As example URL, fill in "http://www.youtube.com/" (without quotes) . As include pattern, type "http://*.youtube.com/" (without quotes). As redirect URL, typ "http://youtube.com/index_ajax" (without quotes).
All done! Anytime you now go to the Youtube homepage, you'll end up with the old layout. Enjoy.
If you don't want to install the add-on, you can simply change your Youtube bookmark to go to the redirect URL. You do this (in FireFox) by bringing up the Bookmarks manager (ctrl+shift+B), right clicking on the bookmark and selecting 'properties'.
I haven't found a way in Chrome yet (if you're using IE, download FireFox or Chrome instead). I haven't checked Opera or Safari.
what is this redirector thing?
It's a simple add-on that redirects you from pages you don't want to visit to pages that you do want to visit (as in, Youtube new to Youtube old).
I think that Google (YouTube's parent company) is purposely making the YouTube page more worse and more worse with each passing "update" for the sole fact of making money off of banners and advertising. Seriously, everytime I go to the home page, the banner for "Happy Feet 2" is staring back at me - and that takes about 60% of the screen. What the hell? I don't want to scroll all the bloody time!
And why are the blocks so much bigger? I can see just fine!
I don't have a problem placing advertisment - just make sure that it doesn't obscure the content of video uploades. At least have the common courtesy to place banners below the bloody page.
Oh, and bring back a scroll bar on you related videos section on the right on the screen everytime I watch a video.
*pant**pant**pant*
Ah, I've got AdBlock Plus installed, so I don't get the ads. I still think the new page is horrible, though.
banners and advertising
i hear ya, then there are the ads with sound that start playing whike you are watching a video.
it's rare, but it happens. i absolutely hate those
I second adblock. It even works with the ads at the beginning of videos.
And thanks for the tip Phi, the old page is definitely better.
Yeah, adblock is a godsend for Youtube. Still hate how it looks, though. If they want to change a website, they should do a little bit at a time, not all at once.
Ajax no longer works. Youtube seems to want people to go through their new page. Are they lurking on forums or what?
Yeah, it doesn't work anymore. >.< I doubt this was the only site for this fix to be posted on.
Dammit, YouTube.
