So just the other day I countered the Agile's grab-and-roll move for the first time. I've done it a few times since, but never on purpose. Is it just an insanely quick timing or am I confusing a different animations with it?

The one where he flips over you? I've never countered that one in my life - didn't think it was possible.
I know that you can counter the attack he always does right after with his dagger; but you legit countered his vault move?
Crazy.

It wasn't a direct counter, actually, but more like what happens when you break out of a grab. the animation was him being thrown to the ground. I've done it a few more times recently, I think. still not able to reproduce it when I try.

update: I think maybe you have to press "attack" to counter it. I spent a long time testing it a while ago but I don't think I can do it consistently still. I think it's a case of the messaging being mismatched to the function: usually gold "attack" indicators refer to something that you need to press the "counter" button to avoid, but in this case grab moves in AC3 are universally countered with "attack".

They wanted to give the Agile a special grab, and they wanted to draw attention to it, but they had no "attack" indicator specific to grabs. I bet this is one of those things that someone wanted to do differently, but required just enough work for it to be superseded by other important things. Just goes to show how hard it can be to get details right in big game projects!

The only thing I can think of is that, in fighting games, to Break Throws or Tech Throws, you have to tap your Punch button just as the throw hits you.

Speaking of special moves in AC3, I just became aware of other unique assassinations and special blend spots that allow Connor to kill from a sitting position.

umm... those blend spot assassinations (not all of them) were shown in AC3 promotional videos/walkthroughs... and you've been able to assassinate from such spots since Ezio's days (kill from bench).

That said, it's really cool to see them all in one video in case you missed a few of them.

This video did make me think of something though. Is it possible to do the rope dart pull toward you attack into a human shield? It would require some very specialized situations, namely shooters would have to see you and aim at you before you get the guy close enough for the kill animations...
