So in ACIII or what ever hell there gonna name it. What would you like to see as side missions?. Do you want the side missions to stay the same?. Or do you want something new?. Or take them out all together?.
I want Side Missions in.
- No Escort Missions; Exception: Allied AI is intelligent and doesn't let you down. Extensive playtesting required.
- Full Synch Requirements on every Side Mission
- Completing all Side Missions of a type or all Side Missions in a Sequence unlocks a cosmetic piece of armor/clothing for you. It doesn't do anything. Just masks over what you would normally wear. Just a nice touch.
Possible Mission Types:
Hide
Guards are looking for you. A timer is counting down. When it reaches 0, you're safe. Being Detected nullifies Full Synch, but killing them all clears the mission anyway.
Den Defense (Revamp)
Select your units beforehand, while during the actual Den Defense, sneak around and assassinate enemy leaders/commanders to make the enemy army lose morale. Could also work for an offensive conquest type mission as well.
Climb Challenge
Remember how it was kind of fun to climb Giotto's Campanile in Assassin's Creed II?
That tower DIDN'T just have a "start climbing, hold Left Stick up until you reach the end." It was a puzzle. You had to think. Have some complicated buildings that you have to climb just like that, for a Side Mission. Full Synch is just doing it under a certain amount of time/pulling off some kind of trick during the climb.
Recruit Training
Use Eagle Vision/Sense to map out a route for an apprentice. The apprentice will intelligently follow that route and kill enemies on your signal. You can tell him to stop or keep moving along that route, sometimes you will have to take out enemies, sometimes you can let him do it himself. The more enemies he kills, the higher XP he gets. Additionally, could be a Full Synch requirement. Every time you're about to click "Go/Action" on him, there is a % Success Chance. If he dies, he dies.
Team Assassinate(Situational/Only In 2012 Sections)
One of your Assassin team snipes an enemy target. You have to make sure pressure is off of them by diverting it to yourself. You can assign your Assassin team different weapons (Sniper Rifle/Flashbang/HE Grenade/Frag Grenade/Sleeping Gas) and set up ambush points before the mission. After you take the heat for your sniper's kill, run back to the ambush points YOU set yourself earlier and kill the guards with help from more of the Brotherhood.
That area of the city is now more or less guard-heavy depending on if anyone escaped or not.
I will add more later.
For now I'm just.. drinking hot chocolate and brainstorming.
So in ACIII or what ever hell there gonna name it.
Why does everyone keep saying this? The main games are numbered, so it's "Assassin's Creed 3".

It's for different ancestors. Desmond is the main character of these games. He'll stay.
Lovely idea. I think that side missions should be greatly expanded upon ACIII. I, however, want several improvements upon them:
- Multiple optional objectives to complete. Remember GTA: Ballad of Gay Tony? Remember all those objectives that the player had to complete for a 100$, but the player could do one of them at a time? I think it should be like that. Also, I think implementing a leader-board for each main and side mission can encourage replay value. The leader-boards themselves will be categorized in various sections.
- I agree with you on not having any escort missions. Those were to boring, repetitive, and slows the pace of the game itself.
- As for the rewards, I was thinking that the side-missions should be tied to a sub-plot. The main story line should be engaging and fun, but should leave out several holes and confusions as to how it came to be. Only by doing all the side-missions will the player have a full comprehension of how the story works.
As for side-mission idea themselves...
THE TROLL UNDER THE BRIDGE: A group of guards are even complete ***holes to civilians. The main objective would be to continually ledge assassinate them, making them wet their pants.
WRECKING THE FREE-MARKET: All one has to do is to continually throw many guards to market stands selling dangerous items to innocent civilians.
INFAMOUS: The objective of this mission would be to become in notoriety. Then, the player would have to attract as many guards as possible in one booby trap location.
PRINCE OF 50-CENT: The main objective of this mission would be to throw a lot of money into a group of guards, thereby causing a ton of civilians to crowd around the area. The player would then have to blend into the crowd, retrieve whatever the guard is protecting, and then disappear.
Because your ideas are amazing.
No kidding, DAZ. Your response was so quick and thorough, it's as if you wrote the question yourself!
In addition, I'd love to see VR Missions from Brotherhood make a comeback.
I loved those, as did many others.
The original mission types should be kept in, but I'd like to see Challenges involving each different individual weapon as well. Not just "do whatever, with all weapons" but a "Crossbow Challenge 1" "Hookblade Challenge 4" "Short Blade Challenge 8" so on.
Another thing is that I would like more, MANY more VR Missions like the secret locations.
Being able to flow through a city is cool and all, but I want to see Assassin's Creed platforming mechanics used in environmental puzzles in the style of Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, etc. The Secret Locations from past games are NOT ENOUGH. There are TOO FEW of them for it to count, it feels like a teaser every time.
There's no reason NOT to include this in the VR Missions, as VR missions don't need to have any story context to them. Add a bunch of white blocks, walls, and red handholds or interaction objects and that's it. Just allow the level designers to have fun.
Actually, that's my biggest thing:
Allow the level designers to have fun. When the level designers have fun, the players have fun.
