This might be more appropriate in the rant thread... you'll see.
Early last November, I got my first gaming system since the N64, it was the Xbox360 w/ Kinect. A couple weeks later, Black Friday came and I picked up Black Ops and Battlefield 3. I had remembered enjoying Ghost Recon 2 with my roommate in college, and thought these would be fun. I finished the BlOps story mode and was excited to play BF3. I had heard BF3 had a better story and better graphics and the single player would be more fun. And it was. I finished 30% of the game pretty quickly and was enjoying myself very much.
Then Christmas came. I had told my wife nonchalantly that I might enjoy the AC series. I thought, for $20, it could be moderately amusing. And if not, I still had BF3 to fall back on. Since Christmas, the I've only played AC/AC2 (with the occasional NCAA12 football game/simulation - big college football fan, so that series will always have a place in my heart). I finished AC2 story mode on Sunday morning. Since then, I've worked on finding feathers. I got the last feathers on Tuesday night (with some help from this website ). Then last night, I went back to Venice to play around. Free run in Cannaregio, practicing super/hyperblending in San Marco and breaking into Palazzo without the flying machine.
(Don't worry, I'm getting to my point shortly).
Anyway, I decided that before I played ACB/ACR, I would finish the last 2/3 of BF3 story mode. Afterall, I enjoyed the game and was getting into the game and story before Altaïr sidetracked me with killing Templars. So I put it in last night after the aforementioned exploits in Venice...
BOOORRRRRINNNNG. Sheesh, run here - shoot this guy - run there - shoot that guy - blow up a tank - run over there - another guy to shoot - blow up a plane - run to another waypoint - get back in the battle area - shoot this guy now. Where's the creativity? Now I don't know if I want to invest the time to finish the game (and learn the game enough to not die every 5-10 minutes again) or just move on.
AC has made me question whether I want to finish a game that I once found really fun, or just move on.
I know what you mean. The uniqueness of the AC series make a lot of other games eem veey bland. They are very difficult to go back to once you've enjoyed the freedom of AC.
In particular, I found the inability to climb buildings in CoD really limiting when I returned to it after playing AC for a long time.
Haha, that was an interesting twist. It does get a little odd trying to get back into games that are so straighforward. AC has kind of become a "gateway game", if you will. It seems to make some players want to get into looser games like Mass Effect, Just Cause, or Arkham City.
Same happened here...but then,i played arkham city. But i went right back to AC the next week.
Boy, did I guestimate wrong... I was 75% of the way through BF3, finished it tonight.
Back to AC!
Yeah il be playing ACB/ACR multiplayer for ages, then il go around to a mates and they will be playing black ops, or worse, a 3hour zombie session. Would have been driven to insanity if it wasnt for the weed...
At the moment I have taken a huge break from the AC series after the letdown of ACR, mainly playing Fallout 3 ( expect some epic vids from me soon for this...)

When the AC3 beta comes out, we'll have to play around with it. Unless I ever get my PS3 version of ACR (still waiting...)
Jack I have those 3-Hour zombiefest friends too! Thank god for the weed..Oh yeah and everything I play now has to have free roam or I won't even bother. Hitman can be the acception, because of the freedom in missions
