AC2 has an in-game database about real life buildings and other locations in Italy. No such luck in AC1. The Prima Guide is a good resource for this information. Here is a list of places that exist today (or once existed) in the Holy Land:
Solomon's Temple
Believed to be buried under the Temple Mount both in real life and in-game
Masyaf
Masyaf Castle (The Assassin's Fortress)
Damascus Poor
Sinan Pasha Mosque (where you find flag #24 in-game)
Damascus Rich
Sarouja Souk
Omayyad Mosque (with the three tall viewpoints)
Salah al-Din's Citadel (flag #7)
Barada River
Acre Poor
Hospitaller Fortress
Acre Middle
Acre harbour
Saint John's Gate (the two exits from the harbour area)
Jerusalem Middle
David's Citadel (behind the cemetery in-game)
Church of the Holy Sepulchre (flags #8 and #9 are on its roof)
Jerusalem Rich
Bab Ariha (Jericho) Gate - (main entrance in-game)
Saint Anne's Church (first thing on your right after entering Jerusalem)
The Temple Mount
Dome of the Rock
Al-Aqsa Mosque (flag #28 in game)
Cool! I like this better than Shaun's usual bad jokes...
Anyway, no such luck on that Cathedral in the Acre Rich District? And what about Arsuf?
For all the emphasis Ubisoft placed on The Cathedral of the Holy Cross, it seems that such a structure never stood in Acre. It certainly would not have been there in 1191 A.D. as Gothic architecture was limited to Europe at that time.
Arsuf is a real place and the location of a key battle of the Third Crusade. Richard the Lionheart, Robert de Sablé, Garnier de Nablus and Saladin were all there. In fact, Garnier defied Richard's orders and led the counter-attack against the Saracens.
I had a feeling Arsuf was still around. I think I remember from learning about the Crusades or something.
That's a shame about the Cathedral. No doubt if it stood there it would have been a world wonder.
I know you already have a database regarding locations, but how about one for people? I'd be willing to help you create one, if you would like.
Seeing Masyaf castle in photo after seeing it in the video game is amazing. I had no idea such a castle had existed, and I'm blown away by how closely it resembles the game model (well, the model resembles the real thing). Also, I find it kind of funny that Ubisoft included a historical event in their game that was supposed to include someone you killed earlier in the game.
which historical event?
also, im glad i wasnt the only one who was amazed by the accuracy
Someone should dress up in white robes with a beak-y hood and start climbing those structures. It would surely make certain people laugh, and get others pissed off. Perhaps make a YouTube video.
I for one, plan to create an Ezio costume for Halloween, and I've collected a GIANT jar of pennies. Put those in a little Sack, and you know what happens next.
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!
It's my LUCKY day.

Well, today people would just see you throwing money on the ground and go "What the hell? Why are you wasting money like that?!"
They would still react.
"When will he stop acting like a fool?"
"He must not be of sound mind!"
This actually reminds me of a thought I had before.
Making AC3 in the future/present/2012, now, whatever; would be difficult because nowadays, buildings are so damn SMOOTH. You CAN'T climb to the very top. There would be less actual climbing, and more "Jump to the side and hold Grab Ledge"

I had the same thoughts. They can't pick a city nowadays and use it for AC freerunning i.e. climbing buildings. They'd have to make the present day missions too linear. Maybe have some breaks in a small village (Desmond may be going across the world to look for Vaults, so maybe we can play as Desmond but in poorer countries where the old-timey structures still exist!)

YESSSS!!! I actually visit little villages like that from time to time and climb around on some stuff.
I likez. Climbing stuff is a mental, as well as a physical challenge, so it's both types of fun for me.

Wait, you do? What do you do to get the chance to do that? (I said "do" a LOT in that...)
Well, sometimes my parents like going on little excursions. Not my dad much, but my mom LOVES going to old decrepit places. My dad's an Atheist, my mom's Muslim and I'm atheist. She used to like climbing a lot in her youth, so I guess I got that from her. But yeah, she doesn't like me staying in the house too much, so she always drags me along with them. As for the actual climbing, I kinda just make sure nobody else is around, and my folks cover for me. Usually don't climb anything too tall, and if I do, I always make sure there's an EASY way down... I don't want to waste 16 bars of Synchronization just to get down from something stupid like that.
Haha, yeah. I like how you wove in an AC reference into that. Clever!
Suggestion: Maybe we should keep religious, political, personal affiliations personal? Not calling you out, DAZ, but I know many people who would get aggravated with something different from their beliefs, and maybe it would be wise to avoid that. That goes for everybody. It's up to Stab, though, to make it an official rule.
Everyone seems quite casual around here, I honestly don't think anyone on this forum would have a problem with someone else being of a different religion/political stance.
Yeah I assumed on here it would be ok, but I don't know everyone personally, so I can't make that judgement. I myself don't care about any of that, but I would just hate anything that divided us. We seem to be a pretty close-knit group.
K, sorry about that guys, but I didn't say that any specific belief is bad. I only stated what my family was.
As you can see, we're all different, and most of my friends are Christian/Catholic. That doesn't stop them from being my friends. I hope I didn't start a war, here, I was just telling a story, jeez

Play Mirror's Edge, that's all I can tell you.

Haha, don't worry man, I was just trying to stop it while I could if it ever happened. No haters here!

I have played and beaten Mirror's Edge on HARD.
That's not Assassin's Creed climbing.
AC climbing, as I'm sure you've noticed, has a bunch of little handholds on the side of buildings.
Mirror's Edge?
No climbing.
Free-Running/Parkour, for sure.
But no actual, hard, real climbing.
OTHER than lead pipes.
And they could make the fences and stuff wallrunnable, but really?
How are you supposed to climb up a Modernist architecture building?
A skyscraper maybe?
Srsly.
HOW:
EDIT: Climb up that ^
Yeah, that's why they should have Desmond travel between countries to each Vault. Maybe going to an ancestor that's experienced each area before heading out?
Wouldn't that take away some of the free-roam feeling? I don't really think it is that easy for assassins to travel from one country to another, nor cheap.
Yeah, maybe they'll just stick with 1 ancestor...what you said makes more sense. I think they should give AC3 that level-select feature we all wanted in AC2, but for the present AND ancestral memories. I mean, I understand that you can't select a "level" in life and the AC universe justifies everything like that, but come on...it's really a game...and we'd be just as disappointed if they didn't include that.
Wait, do you think ACB will have a level-select feature? I don't think we've asked about that yet...
Wait, do you think ACB will have a level-select feature? I don't think we've asked about that yet...
It probably will, because people from AC2 have been wanting it for a WHIIILE.
It seems to me that in each AC game, the stuff you get is kiiinda useless when it was MEANT to be used AWESOMELY, but UBI decided that they shouldn't give us everything right away (so they can make more games), and its use becomes unlocked in the NEXT AC.
Example: AC1, you get a Hidden Blade, but you can't attack with it in Combat. You get water, but nothing to do with it (other than kill people with it). You get a pickpocket ability, but it is next to useless.
In AC2, all these things get "corrected" or added on to.
But in AC2, you get a Horse, as you did in the previous game, but you STILL can't take it in cities. You get a Hidden Gun, but it's soo useless, even throwing knives are better. You get a better fight system... that makes the game a walk in the park because you're so over-powered. You get more enemy types... and each of them have a weakness that is EASILY exploited.
In AC:B, you get a Horse, can customize it, fight with it, bring it in cities, etc. You get the Hidden Gun, you can use it in wicked-looking ways to kill people in COMBAT, mind you, in COMBAT. The AI is more aggressive, and will actually INTERRUPT you during Counters/dodges, so on.
-=-=-=-=-=-
I wonder what they'll introduce in the multiplayer that will be fixed in AC3. Or if AC3 will even HAVE Multiplayer.
I actually think the hidden gun isn't useless. I use it to snipe enemies from very far distances so I can't be seen by any guards. I really enjoyed how they used it in combat at the demo, though.
I'd like to see AC3 have a multiplayer element. Maybe customizing your own Assassin. Not too deep of clothing and gadgets, just pick a class (each of the skins in ACB) and customize it from there. That's not asking too much! After that, you can upgrade your character.
What I mean by "useless" is that Throwing Knives are way better. In almost every way. They're faster to use, maybe they don't travel as fast, but unless you want to kill the poor Couriers from a crazy distance, they're still better. The Gun has WAYY less bullets than the Knives and takes absolutely FOR.EVER. to aim. In Combat, sure it's fun to Morale Lower the final enemy and watch him run, but that's all it really is. Fun. And it allows Ian and Stab to pull off some crazy stunts
I've had many instances where throwing knives just don't hit a moving target as well. I use them for long-distance shots that I need a lot of ammo for, but if there's a guard or courier doing zig-zags away from me, I'll pick my gun any day.
And you can pull these shots off successfully? With the aiming taking so long, and the Courier actually running away and trying to sometimes find cover, it gets difficult. With knives, you can run after the guy, stop, throw one, keep running, throw another and resume running extremely quickly.
Has anyone used the Hidden Gun while inside a Hyperblend?
It's more accurate than knives, and I don't always wait until it's a perfectly straight line. If it's ALMOST a line, then I'll fire. You don't have to wait so long and It's a 1-hit-kill. If he rounds a corner, I just follow him and take him down. They don't run as fast as you.
Good point.
When will they introduce AK-47s into AC LOL!
Then it won't take so long to aim.
Haha, yeah! xD
I wonder if Abstergo will use guns against you in AC3. I don't think it would make sense to try and figure out how to put in a whole new weapons system for the player to use, so maybe when Desmond goes to assassinate a modern-day Templar, he can sneak past armed guards. If he doesn't, then he gets a bullet to the head! I hope we get to have at least a couple of modern-day assassinations, not just 1 with Vidic.

Most enemies in Venice take 2 throwing knives to die. The gun is a 1 shot kill on EVERYTHING, it's more useful in certain areas because of this. If you use a throwing knife you risk exposing yourself as well. Granted, after you shoot the gun you'll become exposed, but at least you'll get credited with a kill rather than nothing.
