So I'm thinking about getting this HD PVR once I get my new card. I did the math and can afford it. Apparently, it has very little lag and doesn't need a computer to play from (like my EasyCap). You guys think this is a good investment? I'd love to join the video-making community...with sound this time.
yeah but its on you its your money !!. i wanna do playthrough vids but i need a recorder / mic and silence... which i live with my mom and sis ( two black loud women ) who call me non stop that would be too much editing. anyways back to you it depends on how offten your gonna do these vids but its on you man.
I'd do them pretty much anytime I play multiplayer or with friends. Singleplayer would be fun to get a walkthrough of sorts. We don't seem to have many of walkthrough-only videos. Maybe I can take a crack at that, but with a twist. Make it different from playing for 100 10 minute videos.
the hardest part about walktrough vids is that you gotta be funny (not a problem for me =) i know this because one of the most popular on youtube is vash12349 and he is funny and proffesional kinda
wow 12:27 and on THB damn we are crazy !!
I'm not a funny guy when I'm doing something alone. I'm always focused. I'm no Tobuscus. If I had a setup like Two Best Friends Play, I'd be able to roll out funny comments all the time. I like to keep present people entertained when I'm the only one doing anything fun.
Also, you'll probably see this happen when I get Splinter Cell Conviction again and play with Xplic3t. Ima loud boy. But not a douche about it. ;D

the only decent capturing device that i know of that does not need a computer to play is tristar mx hd pvr. i would honestly check that one out. a couple of my boys use it and recordings aren't that bad.

That's what the one I'm looking at is called. I looked up some youtube videos of footage using it (of course they used Call of Duty) and the sound was fine and visuals were standard, which I'm ok with.
be careful

The issue with this guy seems to be that he wanted to record in HD and wants his money back. I already stare at a SD tv when I play, so it'll look the same to me. Besides, if I want the HD part, I have to pay another $50 or so. Don't really think it's worth that much. Going to see if there's still a warranty for the standard product, though.
If anyone can show me a better deal on a similar recording device, please tell me. That's why I made this topic.
Up to you, Joey, but I would personally love to see some more MP gameplay. Jack's stuff is great and I want to see how other players play.
Serious commentary is fine by me - Tobuscus' comedic approach is brilliant but I like to hear hardcore fans opinions and thought processes about the game and the way they are playing
Just so you all know, I'm one of those people where, if I see myself in a mirror or hear a recording/echo of my voice, I get all bothered. It's somewhat of a pet peeve, I guess. It's hard to explain. So I might not be making any voiceovers unless someone else wants to do that part for me.
But I always like to put in some comedy in stuff like this. Mostly by accident. Overall, I'll just be playing for the sake of playing rather than laughs, showing personal strategies and tips for those of you that I haven't told yet.
Voice-changer, Joey?
I think commentary is a really great idea in general, Joey, but for multi-player it's pretty much a necessity. I don't see any other way for a viewer to understand what in the heck's going on without it. I'm 100% sure that your voice will sound completely normal to us.
After playing with Stab in multiplayer for a few matches, he told me I have a good voice for it, so maybe. It's not the first time I've been told that.
I could always make compilations of funny or proud moments in games that are 5-10 minutes long. Always up for that.
I'll think about it.

Check out Squiiddish, Loomer, Shenmue, EscoBlades and Rainie. Those are a few of the best gameplay vids out there, with great commentary. Jmf is an alright commentator as well and Covelio has the highest quality AC:B vids you will find anywhere. Then there's AB Xantos, who's pretty much the creator of the poison/disguise playstyle. If you're still in a pinch for more vids, there's GamersBeverage, something of a community channel. There are a lot of guest videos, but most of the matches are played and commentated by MagnitudeX. Last but not least, we have Subject 17.
If you're still in need for gameplay vids, god help you.
IanXO4, I was looking for a link to describe the conversation that the person at neogaf had with the company. From my experience with online shopping there is always two sides to a story and if you can't see the entire story then most likely it is fools gold. I used to read all ResellerRatings and Consumer Reports rating before I bought I my stuff. It wasn't until I purchased something from a reputable company, I won't say who, who had great ratings on ResellerRatings, but the company was scum.

Any ways, I would say if the guy could produce a link to make bought sides readable then he can be worthy to be trusted as far as his review is concerned. I also looked on the company website and did not see his bad comments. Why not spam the company with the bad review on their website - not in a forum - LOL?? BIG QUESTION MARK THERE
Like I said, JoeyFoey, two of my best friends use it and I have seen it first hand. It works pretty good and provides allot of cool features I have never seen on other capture cards.
IDK if this will help, but check this out
go to the link http://www.newelectronx.com/proddetail.php?prod=tristar-mx-dvr
click that more detail tab, there is a video in there. it might be too small, but you can watch that
Thanks Phi! I've watched a few of those players' videos and know there's plenty more - thanks for a few names I can check out. But I was mostly referring to THB Members. I know there are plenty of non-member videos that are just as good/better but I like seeing what people here have got to offer

the issue isnt the capability of the device. the issue is that newelectonx goes to great lengths to mislead the customer into thinking that the device records HD signals, when it does not. if you know what you are getting and agree to the price, that's fine. but i have no respect for companies that rely on deception to make money. the only thing that i wanted to point out was this particular deception.
why not spam their website with bad reviews? he cant... he was banned for posting. not that it matters. i dont really care if they treat a single customer badly. as i said before, the issue is that they are not transparent with their product.
that's observe and biased. i don't think the company would ban you, i have never seen that.
i think you, if you are him, should produce some proof. if you were banned or lets say he for the sake of not pointing the finger, then he would have to had some sort of communication with the company. any company would talk to you. either via email, phone, or something. you can post a recording of the phone call or post a link to your exact conversation with the company.
i would honestly say before you start pointing the finger and taking sides that you should investigate yourself. like i said, both my buddies have one and they are pretty happy with the device, company, and the customer service. i'm sure that if the company was in the business of treating customers badly then they wouldn't be in business or for a better fact, my friends would not have a nice unit to play their video games on.
i just read the description again and i'm not sure where your friend got HD from. besides Joey, said it eloquently anyways - its not about HD or SD, but about a capture card that can record without a computer.

seriously!!! no really, let a company piss me off - you better believe I'm back there with vengeance. really, whens the last time wal-mart pissed you off and you ended up complaining at the target customer return counter with the wal-mart product in hand?? LOL!!!
nah, you would go back to wal-mart and give them a piece of your mind - and make a big seen there. i just tired of ignorance being replicated over and over again without proof. show me the proof IanXO4, not forum post. better contact the company yourself and get the proof since your are supporting the biased review and reposting here. LOL!!
I don't think Ian was really trying to make the product look bad, he was just citing an example of it not working out with the product. Just telling me to be a wary shopper.
forget jeff-dsa. you dont need to look at his post to see that the company misrepresents their product. jeff-dsa doesnt need to prove that in his post when the neweletronx web site provides all the proof you need.
anyhoo. this isnt a real debate. since joey linked to the newelectronx web site from our forum, newelectronx can trace the referring page right here to this forum. outoftym3 joined THB only to leave good comments on the product. thats right... OUTOFTYM3 IS NEWELECTRONX. this only supports my assertion that this company should not be trusted.
and yes, i have proof. established thb members can PM me to see how i figured this out. (i dont want to help newelectronx by helping them evade detection in the future.) in addition, outoftym3 joined right before making these posts, and has only posted here in this one topic. and outoftym3 doesnt frequent this forum because obviously he doesnt know who i am.
Oh crap, I didn't know they could trace back to the site and do that. My bad.
I actually thought he was Jack-Reacher at first, because of the pic. On to another search!
Okay, now I know lots of people use this Hauppauge HD PVR (Tobuscus) to record gameplay. It's going for $199 on its company's site, but I found a few deals that are cheaper for the same thing. Hopefully we won't attract any "new members" with this link...

PS. I would have posted under my original name, outOfTym3. But they locked me out of it. That is just not cool, you guys. but if that is how you treat your users then this is my last post here.
Ban with IP address?
but if that is how you treat your users then this is my last post here.
yay!!!
Joey, the Hauppauge HD PVR is what I used for all of my YouTube videos (all, what, four of them? ). It's not a bad unit, but it's more expensive than it should be for the low build quality and raw lack of electronics. The unit itself is a big empty box with a small circuit board and the component/composite and USB ports. That's it. $200 for that? Oh well, I bought it when it was $250...
It does the job. I had one fail on me, so I exchanged it for another and it's been fine since, though I don't use it often. I really hate the software that it comes with and you can't use any other software, but at least it works.
I'd prefer to go HDMI, but the powers-that-be are still terrified that people will use such devices to copy movies and distribute them online, so HDMI has copy protection that legally sold devices aren't allowed to bypass. So no HDMI options for me.
Since you're just doing SD, have you considered the recordable DVD option that Stab and Ian use? Should be pretty inexpensive and easy to use.

I have, but I'm looking for a method where I have the least amount of lag. So far, I haven't found a DVD recorder that does that. Much of my gameplay style depends on split-second decisions and reflexes.
i think you can just split the audio and video so that the tv and dvd recorder each get their own signals. i should probably do this sometime... i suffer quite a bit from the lag when fighting, and im sure this only gets worse in MP.
And that should decrease the amount of lag? I'm ok with a little bit, but not too much. Maybe 1/4 of a second or something would be doable.
using splitters should completely eliminate the lag.
btw, 1/4 second is extremely long - i dont think any decent gamer would be able to tolerate it.
Well my EasyCap took about 1/2 a second. And the sound was awful.
I've looked up splitters before and it looks complicated. DVD recorders are sounding better and better, though.
Splitting is cheap and easy. Just get a few of these:

Oh wait, I was thinking of something else. Yeah, that shouldn't be too hard. Thanks guys!
Wow, these posts were definitely worth reading. Especially with you gif sig JoeyFogey.
It'll be hard to take me seriously with both my gif and my new user pic. haha
JoeyFogey is denfinitely a troll. Ban him.
i was gonna ignore this topic completely. (too technical for me)
but that outoftym guy made it pretty funny.

my eyes hurt from copying notes all day don't fell like reading long post so whats up with the "out of time "dude
He was basically just selling the product - the company in disguise by the looks of it
Yay! Got my new card today! Now to waste all my money! ^_^
Ok, not sure where to start searching for DVD recorders. Any brands I should look for? (I think I've asked that question before...) Maybe a certain component in a recorder that I should look for?
panasonic has a good reputation. the dmr-es15 model was really popular, so a lot of them are selling on ebay for around $50. its a perfectly decent model at a low cost.
Thanks Ian! I'll look into that one when I can.
I use a Philips DVDR75, but I would not recommend it. I have to configure my DVD ripper to rip in widescreen, because it only records in 4:3, even when playing in 16:9.
So, yeah, Ian's advice sounds good. Hard to buy the wrong thing when it's only 50 bucks.
Couldn't find Ian's suggestion under $170. At least, not one that was working. The company doesn't even sell it themselves. They just have info about it.
Now this might be what I'm looking for. Just need those cheap splitters and I'll be good to go.
(It's an ebay link, so don't click if you don't care)
After doing some research, I've decided on an Hauppauge HD PVR. The setup is easy and you can record with a PC while playing on the television at the same time, having virtually no lag. However, one final question still lingers in my brain: Does any other Xbox 360 user have the video/audio cables (red, yellow, white) that also comes with a blue cable? I've always assumed it was the main 3 plugins, but watching about 4 setup videos of the machine shows a 4th BLUE addition. Anyone know what this one could be for, and more importantly, is it really necessary for my SD TV?
Finding this out will influence my decision on buying it or not. Gotta make up for Jack's video-absence.
u can give roxio Game capture a try thats the one i used and its perfect nothing else is needed cept for a computer but it MAY be just for PAL but i kind doubt that :3
Thanks Vanitas!
And I see the site to buy it. It actually has the "blue cable" I just asked about ready to buy for only $20. Plus, the entire thing is cheaper than the PVR I was looking at!
