In my opinion, the Assassin's Creed 2 soundtrack, composed by Jesper Kyd- a fantastic but rather unknown composer outside of the gaming world- is one of the most beautiful collections I've had the pleasure to hear. It will bring me great joy to study the music intently, and attempt to understand it well.
I'll cover each track one by one, adding to this post with each track.
Earth - Earth, is, in the most simple way I can put it, the "heart" of AC2. It's main theme, a minor ascending of a scale, echoes itself in almost every piece in the soundtrack. It conveys the very mood of the story, or a deep sense of longing for what's already passed. I, myself, picture this music playing, perhaps when an older, aged Ezio is in a study of sorts, and reflects on his life. His longing, is for the road not taken. If his family had not befallen such a tragic fate, perhaps he never would have become an assassin. Perhaps history would not be the same. You might not be reading this.
The piece begins with a lute playing a lonely, repeating phrase, like raindrops on a window pane. A female's voice joins it, singing a haunting melody fit to make the strongest man weep. Then, she sings the "heart" or the main ascending scale, in harmony with the pattering sound of the lute. She reaches the peak of the melody, and an ominous, electric overtone holds pitch with her, then drowns her haunting harmonic, in rhythm with the lute. A set of drums enters into the mixture, beginning a driving, fast paced beat for an orchestra to follow. The woman joins the orchestra, reciting the "heart" again and again. As the "heart" is repeated, a solitary violin holds a harmonic melody, adding to the haunting, but driving atmosphere. Then the orchestra stops, leaving the woman, the lute, the drums, and the overtone to carry a jumping between two notes down in volume. The woman repeats the chilling melody from the first few moments of the piece; but with a choir behind her now, giving her voice the sound of wind in a storm. The melody stops abruptly, making way for a piano to again recite the "heart" with only chords. The woman recites the melody again, alone, and fades as the piece ends, or perhaps, as Ezio drifts off to sleep. To nightmares, or pleasant dreams, I have no idea.
Thoughts, anyone?

You managed to pinpoint the essence of this musical piece. Reading your analysis as i listened really helped me gain a better understanding of this composition.
It's funny you should say that, because while the 360 is in the shop I'm playing Sands of Time on my old PS2. And after listening to that song, I immediately remembered the soundtrack from the game.
Live by the creed, die by the creed!
Pussy, money, weed, that's all a n*gga need!
A couple of weeks ago, I too whiped the dust off of Sands of time and played it on the 360. Probably my favourite action platformer ever. The emulation software on the 360 sucks though, whenever you're fighting 3 or more enemies the framerate drops and the game slows down (almost feels like slow-mo). It even does that in some platforming sequences when there's alot going on on the screen. It's all worth it though. That ingenius ending puts a smile on my face every time.

Kyd also composed the soundtrack for AC1, which never became old. I'm glad they got him back for the sequel. Have you determined whether this song is called "Heart" or "Earth" (an anagram of heart)? One of the comments on YouTube raised doubt.
Nice work, Gray. Please let us know when you find most/all of the soundtrack on Ubi's site.
In march, there is a 4 disc version of this OST coming out! until then, many of the beta testers were given a 2 disc promo for free. Which actually can be distributed freely, since it was never for sale.

Your entire post was amazing while listening to the song. Not to mention the song itself was beautiful! Thank you for posting this.
Why have one blade in the crowd when you can have two?

My favorite's combat in venice, when it played in the E3 demo, I was so confident that the new soundtrack would own.

Is this still happening? What is on the download file(s)? I've been wondering about some music you hear fairly late in the game while doing side missions. It's some haunting monk chanting with a techno beat. It's not on the OST. Does anyone know what this is? Jesper Kyd has his own website with forums, but there's no info there about it. I'd love to get my hands on this song.
"Now you shall get an earful of my beloved sword! Behold, Pillow Talk! Let's rock, baby!"
That's a very kind offer YurkleNorf. I already have the soundtrack (and a fantastic one it is), and I suspected that's what the download would be. I was just looking for proof, which you provided. Thanks again.
If anyone does have any info on that song that's not on the OST - the one that sometimes plays during side missions fairly late in the game - I'd still be interested in hearing about it.

I think I downloaded the OST like 3 months ago. With th link appearing on said video. Amazing a you said, but it helped me to see the song from another angle. Thank you very much.
