Back in April, when we were all eager to find info about AC2 following E3 and were avidly watching the demo, we got to see Carlo Grimaldi for the first time. The assassination in the demo was straightforward, and after the brute gets chopped in half by his own axe, we see Ezio pace up to Carlo, who is cowering in fear from Ezio. He then says this:

"You really are the devil. Wait! Don't kill me. I can give you anything you want. Name your price!"

*fatality*

So why is this relevant now?

Eagle's Bruise made a discovery with one of the 4-5 ways to kill Dante prior to his actual assassination, and now it has made another. After intruding on the chess game between Carlo and the Doge, Carlo runs out of the room screaming "The assassin has killed the Doge! Help!" Carlo unfortunately isn't very smart, and there's no way out of the courtyard because the doors remain closed. I tackled Carlo about 5 times before finally giving up and deciding to dispatch all the other guards before I took care of Carlo. It was after the final punch had been thrown that I went over to Carlo and saw him in a familiar stance...

The E3 Carlo had come back. Looking at his position, he apparently was in the same stance as he was during the demo. I could even see him mouthing the words:

"You really are the devil. Wait! Don't kill me. I can give you anything you want. Name your price!"

I then simply punched him in the face and he was done with, but I thought this was very interesting and knew you guys would like it. My explanation for it is that because Patrice told us that he was actually straight up playing the game in the demo (they just generated a fake mission), they forgot to cut out this Carlo animation upon final release. This animation is triggered when all the guards are killed, which is what happened in the demo as well as what happened during the actual assassination.

Try it for yourselves, have a blast from the past, it should work.

This is very easy to duplicate. Kill all of the guards first (without being detected) and then move onto the circle to initiate the cutscene. Afterward, Carlo appears at the bottom of the stairs doing his pleading animation and voiceless lip movements. He won't move from that spot. Great find, FLAE!

I noticed that if you pickpocket Carlo at this point, he stumbles (which is normal) and then he just stands there. No more pleading animation. However, his mouth continues to move and he still continues to face you no matter where you go (he's locked-on to Ezio). I tried poisoning him and escaping, but I still got the memory corridor (I didn't make it out of the palazzo).

For the record, I only tried this the one time and I killed all of the guards, including those on the rooftops. I have a suspicion that it may not be necessary to kill the rooftop archers, but it's just a hunch.

I didn't kill any of the archers when I did it, so no, the archers are not necessary.
